We had the good fortune of connecting with Joshua Mitchell and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Joshua, other than deciding to work for yourself, what was the single most important decision you made that contributed to your success?
The single most important decision I made that contributed to my success was not comparing my work to other’s work. We find ourselves sometimes competing with other’s work or even mimicking their work. I learned early in this business/field that comparison kills creativity. Do you and do it the way you want or envision to do it. Not everyone is going to love it but not everyone is going to hate it. The ones that don’t hate it are your people.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m most proud of my consistency and relentless passion for photography. There were times when I wanted to quit photography but did not because my circle of people around me, family, friends, and other creatives gave me the boost to keep doing what I love. I got where I am today by having partners who have given me opportunities to be part of something bigger than my profession. They mentioned my name in rooms and to people who may not have heard of me. It wasn’t always easy. The photography/videography business has its fluctuations but if you stay consistent, it will pass. What I want the world to know about my brand is that we aim to please. We always want to fulfill your creative vision and when you do not have a vision, we can create one for you. Your ideas are our focus.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would first take them to my studio to see my workspace. Then I would take them to some of our mom-and-pop spots that serve good food. If it’s summertime, take them to the Lost Island Waterpark and The Isle Casino. Then catch a performance at the Gallagher-Bluedorn Performing Arts Center. Later, have drinks in downtown Waterloo or Cedar Falls.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
The people who deserve credit and recognition in my story are as follows: My mother has been a driving force in my success, with her undying support in everything I do. She’s always had my back.
My mentor Bettina has been pushing me to pursue my education as well as my artistry for years.
My family as a whole has always been a motivation to do better in life and make them proud.
My business partner Kal and my sister (his wife) Felicia have always motivated and pushed me to be more creative in my craft.
Lastly, my children have always inspired me in life, creativity, and making better decisions through my journey.
