We had the good fortune of connecting with Josh SAME and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Josh, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
Finding a way to make a living on something you’re passionate about is critical to long-term success. Winning takes a lot of late nights and failed ventures. You have to have a well of strength to draw from when the going gets hard and the creative industry provides the versatility and support to do just that.
As a missionary kid, I grew up seeing my parents invest their time in helping others. They gave me the gift of being able to pull my inner strength from making a positive impact on others and that’s something that will always stay with me. I grew up traveling and seeing the disproportionate variety of wealth and poverty within the world. Being involved in some larger than life initiatives set me up to have an appetite for doing things that matter and that’s how my creative agency SAME came about.
A creative career encourages self-innovation and expression. It’s a way of never staying stagnant and through artistry, people can authentically be themselves while also controlling their own narrative – not being told who they have to be. Being in a creative field has provided me with a community of people to work with to create a better future. Together we work on projects that bring awareness to issues we think matter the most. And rather than my work being purely driven by money and excitement, I am able to focus more and more on projects that provide a deeper sense of fulfillment.
Beyond that, creative storytelling is a way of making informative content captivating and that has always been something I’ve connected with. Not everyone loves to read, but most people enjoy watching videos or playing games. Through creativity, I provide valuable (and often unique) solutions to solve difficult problems.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Recently, I have been animating a short film for the Alliance Theatre, telling a powerful story about climate change through the eyes of a young girl named Janet from Atlanta. This project was originally meant for the stage, but came to me when the pandemic hit and the scope shifted. Thanks to the Palette Group and the rest of our talented team of creatives we’ve transformed a seemingly impossible challenge into a really meaningful opportunity to tell a story in a way that’s unheard of for theatre.
Beyond motion design, SAME specializes in filming, directing and making interactive experiences. Some recent examples are a commercial for Dollar General’s newly launched DGX stores, an interactive tour of an innovation lab, and some new virtual reality experiences we are working on. I am passionate about crafting interactive experiences because they provide viewers with a way of selectively viewing what is most relevant to them and as a result the user engagement goes way up.
What sets SAME apart from other creative agencies is: we genuinely care about you and not just your money. This isn’t just a business to us, it’s personal. Because of the extensive experience we have in various aspects of the video industry, I am able to provide clients with custom solutions to meet their specific business needs. Depending on your budget and desired outcome, I will bring in whoever is needed to accomplish your project in the best way possible. Whether you have a big establishment or a smaller independent brand, our focus is always first on building genuine connections that enable us to understand often overlooked subtleties that make a big difference in the final product. Feedback is always welcome and every project is different so we don’t pretend to know everything. Your opinion matters and difficult and unusual challenges excite us. Because of these things, we are often able to accomplish projects others find too risky or complicated.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My absolute favorite spot is Desi Spice Indian Cuisine. Their Gobi Makhani keeps me going, man! Beyond that, Okiboru for Ramen, Jinya for buns, and Taqueria Tsunami is a Latin-Asian fusion spot with great bites. For a night out, hit up Northside Tavern where you can catch live music till late hours of the night. Right down the road is a fun restaurant called Ormsby’s which features a variety of games. Located right next door is a club called Little Trouble that has good vibes. I bet you will have fun and you may even get a new Insta profile pic – WHO KNOWS – tag meeee! If you appreciate decadent plant-based burgers, you got to check out The Slutty Vegan – always an interesting experience! Or if you need a healthier more laid-back date hit up Cafe Sunflower.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Since day one, my brothers have been my biggest source of inspiration and support. Even when it seemed no one else had my back, they’ve helped me navigate life’s challenges. Beyond my biological team, are the very close friends that have helped me realize that family is what I make it. I owe much gratitude to these people as they’ve shaped and expanded my idea of what love and friendship are all about. My wedding is one example of how incredible my friends are. A group of creatives (Cinematographers, Photographer, DJs, Graphic Designers, Art Directors, Web Designer, Event Planners, and many others) all came together and gave their time to make my wedding something out of a dream. It meant the world to me that they gave my wife and I such a precious gift.
Above all these amazing humans, is my wife Meghan who loves and supports me in ways I’ve never imagined possible. She is my biggest inspiration, passion, and joy. Find your person, and put them above all.
Beyond the external influences lies the internal, and my gratitude surely extends here as well. To my God, I am thankful for the love I have been given and this authentic life of adventure I have been blessed to live.
