We had the good fortune of connecting with Jie Yan and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jie, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
Over the past five years, my work-life balance has undergone significant changes. Initially, as an industrial designer, I dedicated long hours to mastering my craft and advancing in my career. The demands of the role often meant that work took precedence, and personal time was limited. However, throughout this period, I consistently made time for my dog, who has been a constant companion since I started my career.
Since my promotion to job captain last year, I have gained more flexibility in my working hours, which has allowed me to shift my focus towards myself and my family. This newfound flexibility has enabled me to spend more quality time with my loved ones and my dog. I now prioritize family activities and ensure I am present when they need me, arranging my work schedule around these commitments. This adjustment has significantly improved my overall well-being and satisfaction.
I believe that achieving a work-life balance is essential for long-term success and happiness. My current approach involves setting clear boundaries and taking advantage of the flexibility my role as job captain offers. By working during times when my family doesn’t need me and dedicating my free time to them and my dog, I maintain a healthy balance that supports both my professional ambitions and personal fulfillment. Regularly assessing and adjusting this balance ensures that it remains effective and sustainable.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
One of the most exciting aspects of my career has been working on fixture projects for one of the most famous technology companies in the world. This experience has been incredibly rewarding and has set a high standard for my professional endeavors. Alongside my main career, I have also dedicated myself to side projects in the pet supply industry, designing products for our furry friends, as well as in the plant accessory industry. These ventures allow me to explore my passion for design in diverse and meaningful ways.
Getting to where I am today has not been easy. I faced numerous barriers, including visa issues, language problems, and challenges in building relationships with managers. Overcoming these obstacles required perseverance and a proactive approach. One of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned is that there is always a solution to any problem. If the first approach doesn’t work, it’s crucial to try harder and keep pushing forward. It’s also essential to never hesitate when you have questions—ask more, seek help, and eventually, you will find the support you need.
I want the world to know about my deep passion for design, particularly in creating furniture for both humans and pets. This passion drives me to innovate and improve constantly, ensuring that my designs are not only functional but also enrich the lives of those who use them. My journey reflects a commitment to overcoming challenges and a dedication to excellence in all my projects, whether for high-tech clients or beloved pets.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend visited Alameda, CA, I’d plan an itinerary showcasing my passions for photography, hiking, and exploration. We’d start with breakfast at Ole’s Waffle Shop, followed by a stroll along Crown Memorial State Beach and a visit to the USS Hornet Museum. A day trip to San Francisco would include iconic spots like the Golden Gate Bridge and Golden Gate Park. We’d also venture to Napa Valley for wine tasting at renowned wineries. The week would feature hikes in Muir Woods National Monument, exploration of Oakland’s art scene, and visits to local treasures like the Alameda Point Antiques Faire. Each day would blend natural beauty, cultural experiences, and culinary delights, ensuring a memorable visit for my best friend.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to my 6-year-old dog, Gibby. He is my first dog and has been a loyal companion throughout my entire career. From the moment I started designing for him, even before he was born, he has been a source of endless inspiration and creativity. His presence in my life has sparked numerous ideas and innovations, allowing me to complete my designs successfully.
Gibby has stood by me through all the ups and downs that came after leaving school and entering the professional world. He has been a steadfast friend during times of stress and uncertainty, especially when I faced challenges with my work, visa issues, and other personal struggles. Despite the long hours I sometimes had to put in, he never complained when I came home late. Instead, he greeted me with unwavering love and affection, providing a much-needed emotional boost during tough times.
His unconditional support has been a cornerstone of my journey, helping me maintain a sense of balance and perspective. Gibby’s companionship has not only enriched my personal life but also fueled my professional endeavors. His patience and love have been a constant reminder of what truly matters, making him an integral part of my story. I owe much of my success and resilience to his enduring presence and the joy he brings to my life every day.
