We had the good fortune of connecting with Jaylen Murchinson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jaylen, why did you pursue a creative career?
As a kid I always liked to draw or make things out of nothing. Like for insist making a building made of paper and some random things laying around the floor, or trying to replicate an object that was sitting in front of me, stuff like that and it was just so fun to me. Growing up in the badlands of Camden, New Jersey, i was surrounded by so much graffiti and murals I thought to myself like, ” man that would be cool to show my skills like that”. I never caved in to the belief that “street art” isn’t art because from when I was 4 to now age 22 I’ve sold my “street art” to people through portraits, and now clothing.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My journey in this profession is just the beginning, you know I’m still learning the business side of this creative stuff. Trying to put myself out there you know, make a name for myself in a foreign city. I’ve always been a kind of a quiet person , very but also somebody who like to do a-lot of things on my own, it can get a little overwhelming. Like when i started my first clothing line(JerseyKidKlothing), I had so little time to actually put much work into it, then when I did make time I just ran out of ideas, so I said let me think of something that won’t stress me out too much on ideas and time. That’s when I came up with Quiero Silencioso my current clothing line. Just plain and simple, doesn’t require me to think too hard and waste much of my personal time. What’s funny is I came up with line while I was on vacation in DR. I was sitting on the beach at like 3 in the morning and I was like “Silencioso”, meaning silence/silent in Spanish. I’m half Dominican and since I was a very quiet, laid back type of person I said “quiero silencioso”, “I want silence”. This basically centers around people who are like me you the strong silent type, so this is what i feel like will sort of motivate the most.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Oh that’s easy Centennial, shoot you got the Ferris Wheel, College Football Hall of Fame, Coca Cola, Aquarium, State Farm Arena, Park Events, etc. Now personally I don’t really eat or drink in the city but I’d probably take them to the Suite Food Lounge maybe.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My story is mainly self-motivated but one person who always saw the vision was my late grandmom. Even though she knew I was blessed with many talents she would tell me to do what I felt made me comfortable the most. The best ones she saw was an athlete or artist and I told her, “why not do both”, and then she said “2 is better than 1, you just gotta try and balance them together. Lots of athletes have done it, and so can you”.
