We had the good fortune of connecting with Jamina Kess and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jamina, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I wanted to have a business where I could think outside of the box, catering to the needs of people by tailoring their needs and desires with all the details in mind to make every massage session effective and successful.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
At The Remarkable Touch, all massage services are customized to each client’s needs. For the past 17 years, I have specialized in Swedish, Deep Tissue, NMT, and Sports Massage.I like to integrate various modalities and tools to ensure the best outcome. I feel that the passion that I have spills over onto my own clients and they extend that love and passion by referring their whole families and loved ones to me. I feel that having that kind of trust makes me stand out the most. My company is 100% based on word of mouth. My clientele ranges from children to the average adult Joes and on to the professional athlete, TV and movie celebs, musical entertainers, and reality stars. I have also been on TV myself rendering chair massage on The Real Housewives of Atlanta( season 4, episode 3). I feel that makes me stand out, considering that there’s a massage business on every corner.
Another side of the industry that I have had the joy of working in is the post operative massage world. I say “world” because it is a multi-billion dollar industry inside of another multi- billion dollar industry….plastic surgery. I started working in a super popular plastic surgeon’s office here in Atlanta about 5 years ago. I branched out on my own and practice post operative massage techniques and render body contouring about 3 months after the client’s surgery. I also sell compression garments, post surgical accessories, and my own organic body oil that helps reduce inflammation and swelling. This kind of service definitely has changed the game for me by expanding my knowledge. My clients’ results make my company stand out even more! Again, this has given me even more word of mouth referrals, which makes me feel really blessed. Now, I have started training others in this industry to help them become more successful and knowledgeable about how the body heals and how to aid in faster healing post surgery.
The lessons that I have learned is that you can NOT procrastinate on your dreams. Sell product to gain more revenue. Marketing is huge in the social media world and I’m trying to get my feet wet in that arena. These have been huge challenges for me that I am gradually getting better with time.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I honestly don’t get out much here in Atlanta because of work. But, I mainly like to travel out of state or country when I do have time off.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Honestly, it’s my family that deserves the shout out. My parents for ultimately believing in my dreams of becoming a massage therapist. My mother paid for me to go massage therapy school. That really helped me jump-start my career. My dad gives me great advice on how to deal complicated situations that may arise in my business. My parents were skeptical at first because my whole life, I wanted to become cardio surgeon. However, as time went on, I did not want to pursue the dream because I did not want to dedicate a million years of schooling and be in millions of dollars in debt before I even finish my formal education. I still wanted to help people, but, on a different level.
My husband and children also deserve a shout out as well. They have supported me and sacrificed time spent away from me at times when I have late days and early mornings. If I have a high profile clientele that I need to cater or take continued education classes to expand my knowledge, they sometimes have to take a backseat so that I can grow my business. I make it up to them by giving big bear hugs, many kisses, and speak life and wealth into them, and taking great vacations!
