We had the good fortune of connecting with James Montford and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi James, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
My decision to start my own Counseling service came from a desire to serve people in a deeper and more meaningful way. Throughout my journey as a pastor, counselor, mentor, and educator, I recognized a growing need for faith-informed counseling, mental health support, and personal development within our communities. I wanted the freedom to integrate my passion for ministry, therapy, coaching, and teaching into one practice where I could help individuals, couples, and families experience healing, growth, and transformation.

Starting my own practice was not simply a professional decision—it was the fulfillment of a calling. I envisioned creating a safe and supportive environment where people could find hope, gain practical tools for life’s challenges, strengthen their relationships, and grow both emotionally and spiritually. My goal has always been to meet people where they are and help guide them toward where they desire to be.

Every step of this journey has been motivated by a commitment to service, compassion, and excellence. I believe that when people are empowered mentally, emotionally, relationally, and spiritually, they are better equipped to live healthy, purposeful lives and positively impact those around them.”

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My career has been shaped by a calling to serve people in some of life’s most meaningful and challenging moments. Today, I wear several hats—as a pastor, counselor, therapist, mentor, educator, and doctoral student—but at the heart of everything I do is a passion for helping people heal, grow, and discover purpose.

What sets me apart is my ability to bridge faith, mental health, and practical life application. Many people seek support for emotional, relational, or spiritual struggles and often feel they have to choose between clinical guidance and faith-based support. My approach is to honor both. I believe people are best served when we address the whole person—mind, body, relationships, and spirit.

One of the accomplishments I am most proud of is pursuing my doctoral degree in Marriage and Family Therapy while continuing to serve in ministry, counseling, and caregiving. My wife suffered a stroke in 2021, and our lives changed dramatically overnight. Since then, I have been her primary caregiver, helping her navigate a new reality while continuing to fulfill my responsibilities as a husband, pastor, student, and professional. That experience has deepened my understanding of resilience, family systems, caregiving, and the importance of hope in difficult seasons.

My journey has been anything but easy. Like many people, I’ve faced personal setbacks, professional challenges, financial obstacles, and moments when the path forward was unclear. There were times when I questioned whether I could continue carrying all the responsibilities placed before me. What helped me overcome those challenges was my faith in God, a strong support system, and a commitment to keep taking the next step, even when I couldn’t see the entire path.

One lesson I’ve learned is that success is rarely about talent alone. Success is often built on perseverance, humility, consistency, and a willingness to keep growing. I’ve also learned that our greatest struggles often become the source of our greatest purpose. Some of the most meaningful work I do today is directly connected to challenges my family and I have experienced firsthand.

As I look ahead, I am particularly excited about completing my doctorate and contributing to research that explores how families adapt and remain resilient while caring for loved ones facing significant health challenges. My goal is not simply to earn a degree but to use my experiences and education to help strengthen families and communities.

What I want the world to know about me and my story is simple: I believe healing is possible. I believe people are stronger than they realize. I believe faith and mental health can work together. And I believe that some of life’s greatest victories are not found in titles or accomplishments, but in choosing to remain faithful, compassionate, and hopeful through life’s most difficult seasons.

My brand is not built around me—it is built around service. If my story communicates anything, I hope it reminds others that their setbacks do not define them, their challenges do not disqualify them, and their purpose is often found on the other side of perseverance.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend were visiting Atlanta for a week, I would want them to experience the city through my eyes—not just the popular tourist destinations, but the places that represent the culture, community, history, and hospitality that make Atlanta special.

We would start the week with brunch at The Breakfast Boys in College Park. The food is outstanding, the atmosphere is welcoming, and it’s one of my favorite places to introduce visitors to Atlanta’s food scene.

From there, we’d explore the rich history of the city by visiting the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historical Park. As both a pastor and counselor, I appreciate places that remind us of the courage, faith, and leadership that have shaped our nation.

Another day would be spent walking the Atlanta BeltLine and exploring Ponce City Market. It’s a great place to experience Atlanta’s energy, creativity, and diversity all in one location.

I would definitely take them to worship with me Chapel Hill Church Atlanta and experience the incredible community that has become family to me. Atlanta is known for many things, but one of its greatest strengths is its vibrant faith community and the people who serve others every day.

A visit to the Georgia Aquarium would be a must, followed by time at the World of Coca-Cola. These are classic Atlanta experiences that never disappoint.

Because I enjoy both the city and the beauty of God’s creation, we’d spend a day taking a drive through North Georgia, enjoying the mountains, small towns, and scenic views. Sometimes the best conversations happen when you’re away from the noise and simply taking in the beauty around you.

Throughout the week, we’d enjoy Atlanta’s incredible food scene, connect with friends and family, and spend time creating memories. For me, the best part of Atlanta isn’t just the attractions—it’s the people. Atlanta is a city filled with resilience, opportunity, culture, and heart.

If my friend left after a week, I would want them to leave with more than photos. I would want them to leave feeling the warmth of Southern hospitality, the strength of Atlanta’s history, and the sense of community that makes this city such a special place to call home.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Absolutely. No one reaches their destination alone, and I am certainly no exception.

First and foremost, I give all glory and honor to God. My faith has been the foundation of my life, guiding me through seasons of joy, challenges, growth, and uncertainty. Without His grace, wisdom, and direction, I would not be where I am today.

I would also like to recognize my wife, Sharian. Her strength, resilience, and unwavering support have been a tremendous source of inspiration throughout our journey together. Walking through life’s challenges, especially after her stroke, has taught me lessons about love, commitment, perseverance, and the true meaning of family that continue to shape both my personal and professional life.

I am grateful to the many pastors, mentors, professors, and colleagues who have invested in me over the years. Their guidance, encouragement, and willingness to share their wisdom helped me grow as a leader, therapist, educator, and man of faith. I stand on the shoulders of those who took the time to pour into my life.

I also want to recognize the clients, church members, students, and men I have had the privilege to serve. Many people assume that leaders do all the teaching, but I have learned just as much from those I have walked alongside. Their stories, courage, and perseverance have continually challenged me to grow and become better.

Finally, I would dedicate this shoutout to every caregiver and family navigating difficult seasons. My family’s experience has given me a deeper understanding of sacrifice, resilience, and hope. Their strength has influenced my work, my doctoral studies, and my commitment to helping others find healing and support during life’s most difficult moments.

My story is not the result of individual achievement alone. It is the product of God’s grace and the countless people who believed in me, encouraged me, prayed for me, challenged me, and walked beside me along the way. For that, I am deeply grateful.
