We had the good fortune of connecting with Jamal “Skip” York and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jamal “Skip” York, other than deciding to work for yourself, what was the single most important decision you made that contributed to your success?
Making sure i enjoy what i do, too many times people are forced to work or do stuff because they have to and not because they want to. So i try to make sure that everything i do in life especially in the artistic space is because it aligns with me and i actually want to do it.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I try to create what i see in my head, lol. In terms of what makes it different that would really depend on the eyes that see it. Im always excited to create new things and normally im trying to impress myself so that way im not worried about what others think about it. I think as artist we create because we want to not because we have to and with that people will like what they like and there’s no need to try to make them see or like what i make “art touches who it needs to”. To get where i am today just took work, tenacity, and a genuine want. and no its never easy you have to make yourself do ‘this” because a 9-5 would definitely be easier overall. in terms of my brand and story i just want everyone to know that i love art and creating and i approach everything genuinely and with enough knowledge to know that i can learn more…

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Everyday would be an adventure not sure exactly where i would take them it would really depend on the mood, weather, time, etc, but i can say that we would definitely go to OurBar on edgewood ave and start the adventure from there

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to thank any and everyone who has ever helped, whether with words, resources, time, or acknowledgment. And for those that know me personally thanks for simply being around. Some businesses that have helped foster my talents are “TheSapioMag” “Care Free Black Girl” “Bando Beatz” “OurBar” and “Spill the Tea TV”
