We had the good fortune of connecting with Helen Choi and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Helen, is there a quote or affirmation that’s meaningful to you?
My all-time favorite quote is one by Ralph Waldo Emerson about success. It goes like this: “To laugh often and much, to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty; to find the best in others; to leave the world a bit better whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition; To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded.” I love this quote so much! It’s always been my number because it helps me to be mindful of my existence and everything around me. It helps me to remember that I have also achieved success in those ways.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m an artist currently based in Atlanta, Georgia. I have a fascination with understanding human nature and the way of living. It is the depth that intrigues me and fuels everything I create. I enjoy painting portraits, figures, and other natural subject matters. I find my purpose in portraying the will to believe, heal, evolve, and connect. Becoming an artist was never easy. It was a long journey that started in childhood. And it’s still a process– to build up the courage to be vulnerable every time I reveal my art to the world or to develop my own artistic voice. It’s all about the process. I still face a lot of challenges, but it does get easier the more I create. Not everyone you meet will be supportive or will love your work. And that’s okay. But the sooner I realized my ‘why’ was the only reason to keep going.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Atlanta has the BEST food. Hands down! Too many good restaurants to eat at. You really can’t eat anywhere twice! I always have to try something new so we would go EVERYWHERE. It won’t be right to name just a few! I think the Best of 2020 just got announced haha I’ll be going down the list if anyone would like to join me.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Gosh! There are so many people to thank! I certainly wouldn’t have been able to do this all alone! First and foremost, I thank God for giving me this talent! I can’t say that I’m very good at anything else haha! I do practice every day to develop my skills and my own techniques, but still- It’s just so far beyond what I can achieve alone. The only explanation I have is that it is a gift from God. I greatly appreciate my family for being fully supportive of my passion to pursue art. And I also thank my fellow Lotus Eaters, my friends especially Miriam Marshall for always keeping it real and reminding me to keep going.
