We had the good fortune of connecting with Heather Stevens and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Heather, what is the most important factor behind your success?
Joy! My success continues because I bring joy to what I do and I seek to bring out the joy in families as I document how amazing they are. In my family we talk about how joy doesn’t mean that all moments are happy, but rather a deeper appreciation and decision. I don’t know if Webster agrees exactly but that’s what it means to me, I am not looking to capture perfect families but rather realness and love. I love the photos that are found in between more posed shot of a child snuggling up with their parent or a sweet look between partners. I love capturing a young child play with a flower and hugging their sibling. I love the challenge of helping a child that’s not interested in photos get excited and show off their unique personality. I bring my own joy and love connecting that with others! I am so thankful for this amazing job! Another key factor in my success has been the amazing power of word of mouth. I’ll be the first to admit that I am not the best to advertise or keep up with social media, but I continue to stay blessed with new families that seek me out as my regulars keep pointing them to me. I was just voted Best Photographer in my area and was so humbled to learn of so many families that support my little business. Thanks for continue helping me connect with even more families!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My goal is always to keep my photography timeless. I love learning new skills though my style always seeks to combine new skills in a timeless way. I want my editing to appear minimal, like well applied make up– it just adds to the beauty that’s already there. I’d say the hardest thing professionally is moving to the area (that I also grew up in) 5 years ago. I was so happy to be back, but it takes a while to share who I am professionally with the community. I have taken my time building my brand locally and continue to feel blessed to have opportunities to reach new individuals and families. I want others to know that I love documenting families as they grow and would love to talk to them and see if I’m a good fit for what they are looking for!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m an outside girl so I’d have to say somewhere by the Lake, grab a picnic from Cylantros and head to the green in downtown Woodstock to enjoy it, listen to some music at Reformation, walk around some shops and grab some yummy dessert at Dulce Gelato. Anyone in?

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I think these questions are so great because we are all a part of the community! As clique as it may sound I’d have to say my parents and grandparents. I come from a family of artists and creative individuals! I have been so blessed that I’ve truly been encouraged from a young age to continue with my artistic interests. My parents are both great photographers and my Dad continues to stay involved in Joyful Day, most often from behind the scenes. My mom has always taken great photos as early as I can remember and I’ve always valued photography and the lasting story it tells. I remember her learning to hand coloring black and white photos when I was a child photos and love thinking through how the world of photography has evolved even within my life. They’ve always valued learning and growing and I continue to try to do the same for myself. I’ve been pretty blessed to have such a great support system and look for ways to offer that to the next generation!
