We had the good fortune of connecting with Heather Liana and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Heather, alright, let’s jump in with a deep one – what’s you’re definition for success?
Success to me is being able to have control over my own schedule and being able to choose more specifically in what type of work I want to do. I achieved that goal last year mid April when I took that leap to become a full time artist. It’s definitely in my top 5 of biggest jumps I’ve ever taken. You take the chance on having to create your own money flow, it can be a scary thing. In my world, I have made it. I have two young children so the freedom I have to work around their schedule is the best thing I could have.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I have been creating art for 26 years and the biggest thing I pride myself on is that everything I do is by hand. I can vividly remember one of my first pieces in Kindergarten. I loved drawing the Rugrats and I remember drawing this large T-Rex. My main form of art for the longest time was pencil ( I loved shading) and watercolors. I also really loved calligraphy and doodling, which has formed most of all the type of work that I do now! I think we artists all go through patches where we don’t create to the scale that we would like, I went years without really creating. I never thought about making signs because it wasn’t really something that I had ever done before but I had been requested to create one about 5 years ago and it went from there. I pursued making this a legitimate business 4 years ago. It has been a rough road but I kept pushing through and kept creating, that is the thing I tell people most that want to create art. You have to keep pushing! I am more of an open request custom artist that an artist that does original pieces only and I think that is how I got a good grounding for my clientele is being open to more custom requests. I will literally paint almost anything! I am at this point becoming more well known for my window art around the North Georgia area, which I absolutely love doing! Just keep trying things out, be willing to try new techniques! Be confident in yourself and in your product 🙂
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I live in Cleveland, GA so the area up here is just gorgeous!! I absolutely love the outdoors and there is plenty of it here haha! I would most likely convince them to go hit up a trail. Raven Cliff Falls, Yonah Preserves Trail, Unicoi Loop Trail etc. My friends and I love local coffee shops and there are some great ones around here! Farmhouse Coffee, Sweetwater in Sautee, Jumping Goat. Some of my favorite restaurants in my area are Clyde’s, Cowboys and Angels and El Campesino. There are so many greats shops from Cleveland – Sautee – Helen to visit and many activity places!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Claire and Logan (my two children), they are my biggest reason as to why I kept pushing on when times got really hard. I would also like to shoutout to all of my customers, they are my biggest supporters! I appreciate everyone so much!
