We had the good fortune of connecting with Haley Foster and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Haley, let’s talk legacy – what do you want yours to be?
In terms of a legacy, I hope that I can be remembered as a filmmaker that pushed the boundaries of storytelling. My artistic process is driven by narratives that are considered to be taboo and out of the mainstream. They usually focus on the female experience, and through the filmmaking medium, I’m given a platform to provide representation. I love shock value and making the masses feel uncomfortable, and I hope to be remembered for that as well. I am an artist that doesn’t hold back, and I wear my heart on my sleeve.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
As a filmmaker, I would describe my style as raw and honest. It’s always true to who I am, and I try not to hold back. I just pictured locked my latest short film about a group of girls buying vibrators for the first time, called “Catch the Vibe.” I’m really proud of it, and it’s a story that doesn’t get touched upon often.

I had to work really hard to get where I am today. The biggest thing I focused on was putting myself out there and asking for what I wanted. It seems simple, but it was a really hard transition for me. I think being a woman in film, it is easy to be overlooked, so you have to be bold. There will be people who don’t like that and try to dim your passion, but you just have to focus on your goals.

I want people to value different perspectives and stories, and I will continue to make movies to showcase that. People can get so stuck in their ways, especially when it comes to media and video content, I want to push people out of their comfort zones.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I live in Savannah at the moment, so there are a lot of good options. I would probably recommend going to the Starland district and going to grave face records. Broughton street also has some good shopping. I would also recommend going to Moodrights. It’s a fun and cozy bar with an interesting crowd. Finally, going to Forsyth Park to chill out for an afternoon. It’s a great place to read, draw, and people watch.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My biggest support and inspirations are women in film at SCAD. It is such a male dominated industry, even within film school. These women filmmakers show so much potential, professionalism, and artistic brilliance. I’m very lucky to have the privilege to work with them.
