We had the good fortune of connecting with Faith King and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Faith, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I always loved makeup and particularly lipstick in my early adulthood years. I had a special admiration for a few of the popular brands and drug store brands as well. After delving into the history of cosmetics , the pros and cons ,my passion for developing my own brand began. I wondered what if I could create my own cruelty-free matte lipsticks and get them sold worldwide in departmental stores like Target or Walmart.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I started my cosmetic line in 2015 with 50 Lipgloss under the name “Liptude”. In less than 6 months , I felt stuck and incapable of making 1 sale. I decided to call it quits until I revisited my brand concept again. It was not until I pivot my brand to matte lipsticks and a different audience that my business saw a turn for the best. I rebranded and renamed my company BeVogue Cosmetics. BeVogue Cosmetics grew and expanded for 3 years until , I was a served a cease and desist for copyright infringement. This was my hardest business blow.

It was a huge setback . I lost thousands of dollars in product and marketing paraphernalia. But more importantly, I lost my drive. I couldn’t find the strength or creativity to start over again .

In 2017, I got my fight back. I rebranded my company and changed my name for the third time. I was reminded that I wasn’t starting over , I was starting greater. I was starting with greater knowledge, greater capacity and great experience.

I was born and raised in the Bahamas. While attending high school, I would always hear teachers encourage students to become lawyers, doctors , nurses, policeman. While these professions are honorable and essential what about entrepreneurship. I want to be a beacon of hope to other Bahamians, Americans and other nationalities . I want to inspire the next generation to believe in the beauty of their dreams even if you have limited resources. If I can have my brand sold globally as a small town girl from the Bahamas, then imagine the impact I would have on the small business community and every other aspiring entrepreneur wishing to expand.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my bestfriend was visiting for the week, I would definitely take her to Dancing Crepe Karoke night. For breakfast , I would take her for brunch to Frost Bistro , the food is delicious and service is amazing. After our brunch date, we would go to Greenbriar Mall for a light day of shopping.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to dedicate my shout to my mother who has been my backbone from I was a child to adulthood and now in entrepreneurship. She has never given up on my dreams and always encouraged me in all my endeavors. I am grateful to my mother.
