We had the good fortune of connecting with Faith Beverly and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Faith, maybe we can start at the very start – the idea – how did you come up with the idea for your business?
Before coming up with the idea to start a candle company I had been styling hair for about 20 years. Doing hair and making women beautiful has always been my first love. But after doing it for so long I realized that I needed something to gear towards my future retirement. I always knew that there was something bigger in the world for me than just doing hair which is why I got my bachelor’s in business management at such a later age in life, so that I can pursue business outside of being a hairstylist. Six years after my degree Toward the Light Candle Company was birthed. I made my first batch of candles purely with the intention to gift my clients for Christmas. I googled how to make candles and bought a candle making kit online and made 50 8 oz candles. The experience was so soothing and fun; I knew then that I would never purchase another candle in store. I thought; this would really be a great business Idea… but how do I make it unique? First, I prayed. I asked God to give me guidance on how I should go about launching a line of candles. I knew that I wanted this business venture to be sustainable and that It was going to take thoughtful development. From the core I wanted my products to assist in a cause and create healing in homes to those who weren’t aware of the harmful effects of candles made with chemicals. I also wanted to inspire with my branding and use content that would affirm light and positivity in the human race. God spoke to me and said, “Remember when I brought you from Darkness”? I knew exactly what He meant. This is a long story but I’ll make it short… I, as a troubled teen did not know who God was. He came to me in the middle of the night and introduced Himself. He shined a light so bright in my small bedroom, spoke life into my soul, and changed my life forever. The parts of His words that night that stood out the most were “Look Toward the Light”… which at that time was filled throughout my entire room. He lit my life is now what I want to do for others. Years later after visiting that memory Toward the Light Candle Company was birthed. That’s when I knew that this company will be blessed. Today we are undergoing a new launch that is scheduled to go live in mid-March. Please stay on the lookout for all that we will have to offer.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I have been a self-employed entrepreneur for 20 years. As an entrepreneur, you have to re-invent yourself over and over again. Within those 20 years, I’ve had my share of ups and downs; I spent a lot of time getting to know who I am which I feel is very important in the world of business. I am most proud of my tenacity, resilience, and ability to collectively tell this story. My success derives from the challenges I’ve endured and my unwillingness to quit. I’ve always had the vision to succeed even in my insecurities and I was determined to create a foundation of strength, success, and security. I consider an artist to be anyone that can imagine, bring forth, and produce. There is no right or wrong to artistry, it’s just art. To create a business from the ground up and actually succeed is the art of manifestation. I am most excited for the future of my business and its potential to grow even bigger. What I have learned in business is to take your time especially when it comes to spending money. There are so many aspects that need grouping before immaturely buying supplies, hiring employees, and paying for advertisement. I’ve blown so much money, in the beginning, to find that If I had a better sales strategy starting off I would have prevented myself from losing thousands of dollars. Don’t be like me; take your time and build your full business plan and strategy. What I would like the world to know about Toward the Light Candle company is simply in our mission statement. Our mission is for our products and services to inspire the world through self-care and the love of God. We enlighten with our scents, fragrance names, natural ingredients, quotes, customer service, philanthropy, and our Faith. All things that we set out to do will be to inspire. We will do all of this with smiles on our faces and hope in our hearts. We will do our part on making a difference in the world and keeping the products safe.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I am a foodie and a lover of fine dining… We would go to restaurants like Chops Lobster Bar, Hals, Marcels, or the Optimist. I love to cook so Id also cook something up… more than likely a seafood dish. We would also check out a few lounges like Whiskey Mistress, or one of the cigar bars… Fellaship Atl or Cigar City. I am a bit random so a lot of our fun would be spontaneous visits to wherever and however we are feeling…
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to shot out my friends and family who have always supported all of my endeavors. I have been considered a serial entrepreneur and have not been successful in all of my attempts. It is the support of my close loved ones that inspire me to continue to pursue what ever my heart desires. A special shout out is owed to my fiancé’ whom I love very dearly, for his uplifting encouragement and support. He gives me the freedom to do what I love and the strength to make it all come together. My best friend for being my confident in decision making, and my mother for unconditional love. Last but not least, shot out to the Heavenly Father who makes all things Possible! He is the real MVP!
