We had the good fortune of connecting with Everest Owens and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Everest, maybe we can start at the very start – the idea – how did you come up with the idea for your business?
I came up with the idea for my business, Salubrious, with the notion that health & wellness does not have to stop at our diet or eating habits. We can practice sustainability and care when we fill our home with environmentally conscious habits. I believe that our human experience is amplified when we have a relationship with nature, therefore my gardening services encompass developing organic edible & pollinator friendly gardens. This helps to create a sense of independence & develop a healthy relationship with our environment.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
As a practicing herbalist for 7 years, I have kindled the fire of intrigue and passion for wholistic medicine, botany & sustainable design. Spending periods living in Puerto Rico, my father showed me how to work the land while owning his landscaping business. This fostered my interest in living peacefully and close to nature while still admiring our technological advancements. My mother, a woman who’s excelled in her male dominant field of architectural renovation in New York City, demonstrated to me the power of will. That one can accomplish whatever you put your mind to. Acquiring these progressive traits from my parents I began following a low environmental impact lifestyle, sourcing my careers in evolutionary fields, on a path to incorporate my passions into dream jobs. I evolved my gardening business, which is my heart and soul, out of my cleaning business, which is a particularly unique service as I make and use strictly nontoxic & homemade products. Blending herbal infusions, tinctures and essences for years made concocting natural cleaners a small learning curve. I’ve expanded what I practiced in my home and began to share this new style of cleaning with others. It takes a lot of time and patience to make vinegar smell good! I want others to know that as clean as bodies and minds can be, equally can the place we reside reflect that. As far as my gardening services my dedicated labor and specific knowledge base on herbs and medicinal plants are what I love to study, cultivate and cook. However, there is so much to learn such as complementing the habitat with native plants, understanding different applications and knowing the weather is temperamental. I am so grateful to be able to make a living off of what I’m passionate about; earth, food, therapy and wellness all come together in my business practices as I aid in caring for and creating small gardens. So, it is rewarding to know that following what it means to be salubrious, something that encourages health and wellness, I can have a dynamic balance in life. The lesson I am constantly learning is that i am my biggest enemy, the road to independence isn’t smooth and it takes a lot of will and perseverance to want to see yourself in a position you dream of.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
There are a few musts when visiting Atlanta – between dining, experiences and art, one would have plenty to see and beg to return to. To begin one has to find out where the snacks are, both versatile as breakfast and dessert are Revolution Donuts & Coffee and Dulce Vegan Bakery. As your traveling to and from these cute joints, one can walk the Beltline, an awesome pathway encircling the A to highlight historical neighborhoods. Murals, music, and fun are littered throughout the journey. One chic stop along the path is Ponce City Market, harboring one of my favorite restaurants, El Super Pan, with great tasting, authentic latino food. On the opposite end of The Beltline, towards the West side, is another favorite restaurant, Boxcar, a reinvented abandoned warehouse turned brewery, Not only are all these places powered by the sweetest staff members, they also, all offer the best vegan options in the city. If one isn’t tired after enduring the infamous Atlanta traffic, trekking the beltline and inhaling food, the fun doesn’t end. One can head to Andretti’s outside the perimeter of Atlanta, a blend of go karts & arcade games for ALL to enjoy. Throughout one’s stay you’ll tag along multiple visits to the skateparks, Joyland or Newnan. In my love for the outdoors, one will also enjoy a stroll through the local and beautiful Cascade Nature Preserve. I’m sure one woud be tired and pleased with their trip to Atlanta.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My husband, Justice Owens, deserves to be in the spotlight. At every turn of creating my business, becoming independent and even the extreme anxiety i have about the future, he is always there for me. Encouraging me, hyping me up, reaffirming my sense of self-worth. To be honest, it was his example I took after when starting Salubrious. I was able to watch a young man tackle life with the solely useful tool of his mind. His understanding of people and how to mediate situations is astounding. Even before the collapse of society following the covid pandemic, he was geared to being independent, coordinating with project managers, client and coworkers, balancing different jobs, all while remaining calm and collected. His application to being an independent contractor, inspired me to practice offering a service I felt highly skilled and knowledgeable in. We’re each other’s cheerleaders and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
