We had the good fortune of connecting with Evangela Gibson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Evangela, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Honestly, my thought process wasn’t clear initially. Starting my own business had not been something I thought about or envisioned myself doing. At the start of the pandemic I was actually laid off my job on my birthday. I knew I wasn’t going to feel comfortable going into someone’s work place any time soon. I began to brainstorm what I could do to make money and would also enjoy. When I made the decision to do this I knew it wasn’t going to be easy, but I knew I just had to get started and learn as I go. The last thing I told myself I would do all I can to remain positive throughout this journey.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I have my own business E’s LocR Room which is an online apparel store that caters to people with locs (dreadlocks). The designs are created to help express love and appreciation for their loc’d crown. Both men and women can shop my online store. I’ve also added some all natural hair products as well, that can be used on locs and/or loose natural hair. I currently have 4 products, which includes; Growth Oil, Rose Water, Aloe Vera Moisturizer and Shampoo Bar. My tag line, Stay Loc’d In means multiple things, but the main is being committed and focused. This has been in no way an easy journey but I’m still on this journey because I’ve been staying as positive and I can and committed to this process.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There are definitely some people who deserve a shoutout and recognition for helping me through this journey. My Mom of course, always going to be my number 1 supporter and encourager no matter what. My siblings (Brian, Rhiah, Rebekah, Joshua, Vaughn) have been so amazing with the support, very helpful criticism and just everything. My best friend Jenese (who has her own business) has been in my corner since day one with the support and advice. I love ya’ll and I’m so appreciative for the continued support along this journey.
