We had the good fortune of connecting with Eustacia Jennings and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Eustacia, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I first started Jennings Environmental, Safety and Security (JESS) Consultants in 2016 after leaving a job in corporate and realizing I would be better served utilizing my skills and knowledge in the safety and environmental field as a consultant. The business did not take off then and I went back into corporate work. A few years later I found myself terminated and decided to put all of my energies, resources and focus into branding, relaunching and growing my business. I knew it was the only way I would be able to receive the respect and proper compensation for my experience and expertise. I also wanted to fill a void I noticed in the industry having a greater impact. I would be able to do this while creating flexibility and freedom in life to travel that I dreamed of.
What should our readers know about your business?
Jennings Environmental, Safety & Security Consultants is a safety and environmental consulting firm that equips governments, private businesses and NGOs with the knowledge, skills and guidance to ensure maximum efficiency and productivity by reducing risks, preventing loss and fostering sustainable behavior.
JESS Consultants was birthed from a place of pain and passion. The pain of experiencing first hand the impact job related injuries have on a family. The passion and love for the environment to safe guard our resources for future generations. The verse before He formed me in my mother’s womb rightly describes why I was destined to be an environmentalist and teacher at heart. I like to say I leaped with joy in her mother’s stomach when she was taking the class “Man and his Environment” while completing her Teaching Degree at The College of The Bahamas. I spent many summers and weekends as a Pathfinder hiking, camping, learning about God through nature, gaining many basic survival skills and developing skills that would take me through life.
When my Daddy told us as a family that he had an illness, toxic poisoning, that affected his nervous system due to occupational health hazards it shattered me. I am a Daddy’s Girl through and through. This impeded his ability to provide for us as he would like, but worse, it frighten us at the possibility of losing him. I never understood how all these experiences would connect to birth and bring about JESS Consultants.
This is not just a job for me this is my calling and my ministry – saving lives and promoting environment stewardship. The thing that gets me excited is that I get to work everyday to save lives, save our communities and save the planet. I get to make this world a safer and a better place.
I have over 12 years in environmental education, with 20 years working in the environmental field and 10 plus years in safety experience and training spanning numerous industries including the Power, Maritime, Aviation, Oil and Gas, Manufacturing and Food and Beverage Industries.
The element that sets me apart from other environmental and safety consultants is that I have an international approach and I am global minded. I have traveled to over 65 countries, lived and worked in 5 countries across numerous industries, private, public and NGO sectors. These experiences have shaped my worldview and opened my thinking and approach to not just life but business because I am a world changer.
At JESS Consultants our slogan is safe people, safe places, safe planet. The core values of JESS Consultants are integrity, authenticity, discipline and creativity which reflect my personal values.
This entrepreneurial journey has been difficult but rewarding. I am still in my first year of relaunch and working through all of the challenges of finding balance, growing client lists and building my company.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My perfect week in Atlanta entails spending time in nature. Daily walks in different locations with Piedmont Park, The Beltline and Stone Mountain are the first picks. The Atlanta Botanical Gardens is also one of my favorite spots. These walks are a must because I am a total foodie and spend way too much money and consume far above my recommended caloric intake that must get burned. I can’t pick just one restaurant because I am always trying new restaurants and hardly ever disappointed. When I am not able to travel I enjoy traveling through my food by trying different cuisines. My favorite cuisine remains Caribbean and Soul Food.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
A few months prior to being terminated I ran across “The Bloom Society” by Pastor Lola Moore Johnston. The bootcamp and community helped me to find, define and reshape my purpose. We read and discussed Nona Jones’s book “Success from The Inside Out” which helped me to deal with issues that blocked my true success. My mentor Honorable Councilwoman Shannon Ighodaro of the City of Miami Gardens, first Bahamian American to be elected to such a position, also spoke life and promise into me, guiding me along the way with her “Strategic Empowerment Wheel”. When I was released from my job I had already built the foundation I needed to succeed, I just lacked the faith to step out. Being set free was needed to push me into my purpose.
