We had the good fortune of connecting with Essence Massey and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Essence, maybe we can start at the very start – the idea – how did you come up with the idea for your business?
How I came up with the idea for my business is actually kinda weird. I remember back in 8th grade I use to constantly catch the time 9:11 on the clock everyday , whether it be a.m or p.m I caught it. From 8th grade forward I began to notice the same numbers 911 ,9:11 ..somehow . Fast forward to me being 21 and finding out I’m pregnant and my sons due date was 9/11/2014, creepy right!? So I took it upon myself to look up these numbers and this is what I seen “ It’s an angel number, and it means that you’re ready to shine your divine light into the world. Your life may be about to enter a new phase.” Mind you in school I was big on fashion and just looking different. Fashion was always my outlet to make myself feel pretty and confident. In 2021 I decided to just take a leap of faith and find where I fit . I went through a couple names like litlooks and others but once I heard myself say 9:11PM outloud it just felt right.! Til this I still see 9:11 on the clock everyday. So I guess you could say it was destiny!

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’d have to say most of my designs are made off of my emotions and eagerness to learn. I’m very stubborn when it comes to taking help, so mostly everything I know is self taught. I think what sets my brand/clothing apart from others is I’m not afraid to accentuate the body or try bold prints. I’m not ashamed to upcylce old clothing for sustainable looks. I pour my soul into my designs. Some lessons I’ve learned is create scarcity with your brand don’t be accessible. I’ve also learned that creating a routine and staying disciplined is huge in being successful. I’m not at all where I belong in the fashion industry yet but mark my words… you’ll see my designs on red carpets one day! I’d like the world to know that I will not stick to one aesthetic. If I can imagine it I can create it. I love dresses but that won’t be All you see from me.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Downtown is always fun! You get to see people in their elements looking and feeling genuinely happy! Nightlife is on 100 here so there’s plenty to party about lol! But I also love the art galleries and museums.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would love to give a huge shoutout to every woman out there that has inspired me by being themselves. Also Would like to thank my mother for being a huge rock when I needed it most. Last but not least the love of my life Rikki Tan, you’re there for me everyday through ups and downs and I wouldn’t be where I’m at without your love and support! So thank you.
