We had the good fortune of connecting with Empress and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Empress, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I thought back to the time I made over 2 million dollars as a manager of a sneaker store in less than a year! I was overworked, under-appreciated and living beneath my privilege. Thinking back on that experience initiated my confidence. I knew if I could use my passion for customer service to build up someone else’s vision I felt it was time to build up my own. I’m able to visualize a look that compliments their unique personality and I’m making a difference in my clients lives. Even when my clients aren’t as confident I know how to build them up. It’s the confidence that creates opportunities.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I want all of my clients to look and feel like an Empress. I’ve done a lot of training with some amazing artists such as DeShawn Hatcher and Lauren Dimelio. They taught me techniques but also how important it is to create a signature look for my brand. That’s been my biggest challenge as I create looks that resonate with each client. I’m getting there. I will say the best looks are in collaboration with my clients style.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend came into town the itinerary would include all of these spots: 1) Ofcourse we’re doing fab makeup looks

2) Apex Museum & Martin Luther King Jr National Park

3) Winery in Savannah

4) Real Estate in Buckhead

5) Breakfast at Barney’s for brunch

& anywhere else but Lake Lanier! That place is haunted!

I love going anywhere I can learn about the history of my people. I appreciate those that respect my ancestors by acknowledging that the struggle for African Americans continues today, We continue to struggle within a social construct that wasn’t intended for us to thrive. Meeting those who understand this or fight for change is important to me. My children’s futures depend on these individuals.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
A special shout-out to God for bringing me through my lowest moments. It hasn’t always been easy as a single mother but I keep the faith.
