We had the good fortune of connecting with Emily Anderson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Emily, how do you think about risk?
Risk is in everything we do. Without taking risks, even if they end up being failures, we can never grow. Risk to me is just part of the adventure of life. If I never took any risks I wouldn’t have my career, my business or my personal hobbies that bring me joy.
I encourage stylists that take my consultation and communications course to branch out and take risks in how they view their client to stylist interactions. Break down more than just and inspo picture. Small risk of trying something new creates a large reward in client trust and retension.
In my personal world I ride motorycles, which is a high risk high reward activity. Taking the risk of learning, and riding in Atlanta traffic, is worth the reward that it provides.
Risk provides opportunity, take the risk.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I would say that I am mosty proud of my communication based approach to doing hair. I spent so many years unsure of myself and how to properly explain my services to my guests, but now it is the foundation that sets my salon apart. I have always been interested in hair from a really early age. I was the kid who cut other peoples’ hair with scissors in school. After graduating highschool I took a year off then attended Toni&Guy Atlanta Academy, hair school was the easy part. After hair school it was a journey of multiple salons, a lot of humbling moments, failures and an amazing amount of continued education. It was lot of things, but easy wasn’t it. I allowed myself to accept those humbling moments and learn what not to do from the failure. I know that’s incredibly cliche, but thats exactly what had to be done to get to today. I learned that I will never be the best at doing hair, but that I can be the best version of myself for my guests. If there was one thing that I would want the world to know about my brand and story, its that its constantly growing and improving and that no matter what happened to get here I only plan on getting better.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
The first place we would go would be down town Atlanta. Hands down. Monday we would go to Krogg Street Market to eat at Gu’s dumplings. They have best dumplings in the city for the best price for what you get. Absolutely amazing.
If these friends are like me, they ride motorcycles, so we would use Tuesday to ride up through Red Top Mountain and end the day at Red Top Brewhouse in Acworth.
Wednesday would be back in Atlanta for a day at the Aquarium, souly due to how cool it is. After that would be an immediate trip to The Vortex in Little 5 Points for burgers and their brewed in house beer.
Thursday would be a striaght shot back up I-75 to the Tellus Museum. If you haven’t been, you should go, absolutely amazing.
That day would be museum, maybe high Southern Devil Harley Davidson across the street and ending the day at Stock Yard in the Marietta Square.
Friday would be a day in downtown Woodstock at Refermation Brewery and eat whatever food truck they had that day, or one of the local bars.
Finally, Satruday would just be an easy day in Kennesaw and most likely eat at Iron Age for some all you can eat Korean BBQ.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My mom Carol Driskell honestly has been my biggest inspiration and encourager since day one. She showed me that if I’m passionate about something to be all in on doing it. As well as my mom, a big shout out to Toni&Guy Atlanta Academy and the director Darian Bishop, who made finding my passion and love for this industry so easy. It was filled with so much amazing education, as well as a surplus of opportunities to get noticed and hands on in the field.
