We had the good fortune of connecting with Elizabeth Gerdes and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Elizabeth, what do you attribute your success to?
I put the success of my brand in the name of my company, Stitch Above the Rest is exactly that. As the owner/operator of a small business, making high-end custom window treatments, I wanted everyone to know when they saw the name of my company what they could expect. Transforming an ordinary space into an extraordinary one is not something everyone can do. I offer my clients custom, detailed, hand-sewn, over the top, and completely unheard of designs. I also offer traditional small scale treatments. Each job is custom to the client, their space, their vision, and their custom chosen products. Being able to offer any style the client wants or needs, provides a niche in this market. Too many small businesses are afraid to step out of their comfort zone and try something new. For me, I love the challenges that come with it, combined with the sense of fulfillment to be able to help where no one else could. Being able to adapt to different clients, in different homes, with different styles, and still provide each and every one of them a high-end quality product that transforms and finishes their space is simply one of the many reasons for my success.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Stitch Above the Rest is an award-winning window treatment fabrication and design studio serving customers in metro Atlanta and around Georgia. As the owner, I professionally design, fabricate, and install a full line of high-end custom window treatments. I serve both commercial and residential clients. Though I cannot possibly serve every window treatment need out there, I design my business around two things, 1) High-end quality and 2) Customer service. Most clients call me because they want to finish off their space with great window treatments, but don’t know where to start. I help them through the entire process, start to finish. I meet with them, figure out their wants and needs, go over all the design choices, fabric choices, and hardware selections. I then take official measurements too. Once we have everything figured out, I am the actual one fabricating that treatment, no matter the size, shape, or scale of it. Upon completion, I come back with my team and install it. Offering turn-key service like this sets me apart from the competition and allows the client to rest easy that the same person is handling the entire project. I also like to keep them informed along the way, so they know exactly what to expect. Following through on what I promised, on time, in budget, and with high quality materials and fabrication techniques, my clients end up with the perfect finishing touch to their space.
Are there any things you like to do or places you like to eat when you have a friend visiting from out of town that you’d like to share with our readers?
Hiking is the thing I love to do the most. Whenever I can, I like to take my breaks hiking through the Georgia mountains, trails, and waterfalls. Cloud Canyon is one of the first places on my list of beautiful places to show visitors, however, Stone Mountain is a must-see also for anyone that hasn’t been there. I could go on and on about outdoor places to visit, but as long as you’re hiking around Georgia, it’s a good day. When I’m close, I love to visit Ponce City Market. It has so many things to do from shopping, eating, playing mini-golf, to also renting bikes. It’s a great place to hang out with friends or find a unique gift. Another thing I’d love to do with visitors to the city is to take them on a segway tour around the city. The segway can take you to so many places in such a short time, you won’t believe all you can see. From Centennial Park to Oakland Cemetary, you will hear about every piece of history Atlanta has to offer. It’s a great way to get to know the city and its landmarks. Everyone should do this in the cities they visit. I also enjoy a good night out with friends having a nice dinner and drinks, or just playing around at Top Golf.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to give a shoutout to my husband Glenn Gerdes. From the initial concept of this business to today, Glenn has provided unwavering support. While working full-time, raising three active kids, and running a household, we have grown this business together. He has always been there to cheer me on and is quick to jump in whenever needed. The love and support he gives me help propel me to the next level every time. I don’t know where I’d be without him. Also, every custom window treatment fabricator has to have a great installer or the equation just falls apart. I am so thankful to have Dave and Kathy Starner of Starner Finishing Touches installing for me all these years. Dave’s skills at making everything work on the job site to Kathy’s ability to assist with everything else, makes me look even better to my clients and puts my mind at ease when that finished product goes up. They have provided unconditional support for me and my business over the years and I don’t know what I would do without them. I cannot possibly thank them enough for all they do. Finally, I’d like to thank my clients. Not just for the financial support that has allowed me to contribute to my family and household, but for all the rest of it too. For allowing me to come into their homes and businesses and letting me be creative with their spaces. For trusting me with their ideas, concerns, fears, and hopes. For their patience with my schedule, and for believing I was the right person for their job. I’ve been blessed to have some really amazing clients and I hope they all know how thankful I am for them.
