We had the good fortune of connecting with Dyane Loney and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dyane, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I started this business with the mindset of paying for my school tuition. I am a full-time doctoral physical therapy student who desires to minimize her loans use throughout her academic career. My passion for drawing led me to create henna tattoos for others’ moments of celebration or pure fun.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
What makes me different from other henna artists is I love to re-create unique tattoo designs for each customer. I start creating tattoo designs by requesting customers to provide me with a couple of styles they love. In addition, I modify each tattoo with details free-handed to customers’ desires by adding words in different languages, special dates, childhood memorabilia, and, most commonly, trial permanent tattoo designs. As a full-time doctoral student, I made a lot of sacrifices to support my business. I used some of my savings to enter into many festivals and advertisement deals to get my business where it is now. My passion for recreating henna tattoos for individuals has pushed me through my challenges. Over time, I learned that there is always space for your craftsmanship since everyone is unique.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My favorite spots in town to hang out with friends include food and Latin dancing. My family is from Trinidad and Tobago, and we love dancing. I usually enjoy salsa and bachata dancing at my favorite studios, Tumbao Dance and Pasofino Dance Studio. In addition, I am new to the area and found Taco Takeout restaurant as my secretly favorite place to eat authentic Caribbean food.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to dedicate my success and mentorship to my family and friends in Melbourne, Florida. Without their support and encouragement from them, I would have given up on my career as an artist. In addition, I want to give my parents a special warm thank you for sharing and keeping every artwork I created growing up, even when they were very novice-looking.
