We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. Lana Holmes and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dr. Lana, can you share a quote or affirmation with us?
My favorite quote comes from Dr. Maya Angelou. She stated “, If you are always trying to be normal, you will never know how amazing you can be.” To me, this means that being different or unconventional are assets, as opposed to liabilities. And this is true for the professional and personal dimensions of our lives.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a licensed clinical psychologist based in the metro Atlanta area. But more than that, I am a Black, bisexual, woman; a nerd; an Air Force brat; and a punk rocker at heart.

From an early age, I felt compelled to help find ways to lessen, heal, and work through the pain that we all experience as people. Moreover, I wanted to break down why we as people behave, speak, and hold beliefs in ways that compound that pain. And when I looked at my options, clinical psychology resonated with me the most, as a means of doing something about it.

Moreover, I know that those of us who are marginalized and oppressed bear particular kinds of suffering that can be difficult to describe and understand, if you haven’t faced it. That’s why I connect my lived experiences with years of clinical education, training, and work; for a deeper and more authentic style of therapy.

I approach therapy as a collaborator that takes evidence based treatments and tailors them to the needs of people who work with me. Furthermore, my areas of expertise include: trauma, depression, anxiety, bipolar disorders, polyamory, BDSM, kink, spirituality, cultural competence, and social justice. Finally, I typically work with adults who are ready to actively invest in therapy.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
For fun, I would take them to the High Museum of Art and the MLK Historic District.

For hanging out, I would take them to Infinite Realities- Comics, Games, & More and Charis Books & More.

For food, I would take to them to Your Dekalb Farmer’s Market so that we could have a picnic at a local park.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are so many people I want to praise and show gratitude to. I want to thank my loved ones and colleagues for pouring your love, support, and faith into me.
