We had the good fortune of connecting with Dorvell Ferguson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dorvell, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
My pursuit towards an artistic career began with a passion for wanting to be different from others. Creativity allows you to showcase your unique self while putting your own spin on things. It is interesting to me how people can have similar characteristics, but still be so vastly different from one another. Due to this factor, two people can take a picture of the same subject, but obtain two completely different results. One of the main reasons I love photography is because of the freedom I am given to capture any moment I desire. Then I can further edit the photos to create a deeper dimension to generate more interest. By partaking in photography I can convey my feelings into an art form. I believe that is the beauty of it.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
As it concerns my art, (whether it is photography, fashion, modeling, or music), my ultimate goal is to always tell a story. With photography I take pride in providing people with a sense of authenticity. When looking at my photos one feels like they are actually there witnessing the scene. With my modeling and fashion I create statements by showcasing how I would wear certain items. With music I can express my feelings that many may relate to. As you can see I have many interests, and what sets me apart from others is my burning drive towards my goals. When I have a vision I do everything in my power to achieve my goals no matter how long it takes. One aspect of being creative is being your true self which helps you gain confidence with the outcomes of your decisions. I am proud of myself for my dedication and determination, and I am definitely excited for what the future holds for me. I have progressed much throughout the years. To get where I am today it took countless days of learning new skills, taking big risks, and being willing to gain new experiences. Of course it was not easy getting to this point. One obstacle I had to overcome was caring about other people’s opinions. I also had to push myself out of my comfort zone and try different opportunities. The most important lesson I have taken away is that if I put my all into what I am doing, the rest will fall into place and greatly benefit me. I want people reading this article to know that I have come too far to give up on the great dreams I envisioned for myself, and that they should expect to see more from me as time progresses.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.

To start the day off, I would take them to Einstein Bros. Bagels for breakfast. They have really good breakfast sandwiches and coffee. After eating our meal, I would take them on a tour of one of the most beautiful campuses in Alabama, and my alma mater, Troy University. Next, if it happens to be a bright sunny day, I would take them to one of the most peaceful spots in town, Pike County Lake. There we would relax while being surrounded by the peaceful nature scenery.

If they are feeling hungry again I would take them out for lunch, to one of my favorite spots, Flo’s Kitchen. They have amazing Philly cheesesteaks, wings, and burgers. While downtown, I would have to ask if they wanted to take some pictures. As a photographer, I always bring my camera everywhere I go because you never know when someone is ready to get in front of the camera. For pictures, I would also take them to the Troy Parks and Recreation. The Park has a humongous open field where you can see the clear blue skies and sunsets easily. They also have a trail that we could walk through and would be great for nature pictures.

Next, most of my friends love fashion and clothes as much as I do, so I would take them to all the thrift stores: Goodwill, Salvation Army, and New Life Thrift. In addition I would take them to TJMaxx. Everyone knows TJMaxx has good deals lol. The last clothing store I would take them to is Step In Style. They will have you set with the newest shoes that come out along with fashionable clothes.

Next, we would find a place to have dinner. I would probably take my friend to Santa Fe Cattle Co. If I was to compare, it would be like going to Texas Roadhouse lol.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Firstly, I would not be in my position mentally or physically if it was not for God. He deserves the most recognition in my ever progressing story. I am greatly thankful that God presented being a creative as a passion for me. Before my love for photography began, I had a love for basketball and envisioned myself becoming an NBA player. However, while in high-school I sustained injuries while playing. Although I was known for playing basketball, I decided it was time to pursue other avenues. I felt that if I was good at basketball but better at other skills, then why not do what I’m best at. With the support of family, friends, and teachers I began taking pictures and modeling during my sophomore year of college. Many people have helped me elevate my talents and become more successful. Both of my parents raised me to have a fierce drive to achieve my dreams. My mother specifically helped me meet great mentors that taught me much of what I know today. All of these people have been a great inspiration to me, but I learned the importance of motivating oneself. I have to give myself credit for never giving up! It is important that you never give up what you love for anyone. I just recently watched an interview of Jay-Z, a well-known rapper. He talked about how you should continue to fulfill your goals even if people don’t believe in you. If someone does not have the same vision as you, why care what they have to say? Why let them stop you?
