We had the good fortune of connecting with DJ Prince Akeem and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi DJ Prince, what do you attribute your success to?
The most important factor behind my success and brand has always been putting the people first. When I’m playing an in person event or venue it is about giving the people a vibe, a great experience and to walk away leaving on a high. Since I made the move to virtual due to the pandemic, it has been about building a community which has grown into the Royal Family. Always knowing that it’s much bigger than me. I provide the soundtrack but the energy is just as important!
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m a DJ based in Atlanta, GA and luckily spinning virtually on Twitch has allowed me to build a following from people around the world. I think having a really strong passion for music and a vast knowledge of the past and present has helped me a lot. I’ve been lucky enough to have that passion translate into performing pretty seamlessly. Bending genres, blending sounds and making people feel good…that’s what comes to mind when I think of my style and approach. I get excited about finding new ways to be unique and provide a different sound. I got to where I am today with a lot of grit and determination. I started at the bottom…house parties, bowling allies…really anything you could think of. I practiced in my basement everyday for a year until I felt like I was ready. Honestly once I got out there the process moved quickly. I started playing multiple lounges weekly, special events, weddings, corporate gigs…you name it. Things grew at a rapid rate and the referrals started coming in. It wasn’t easy by any means, I put a lot of work into setting the foundation and it paid off. Some challenges I have faced along the way have been having to pass on certain gigs because of locked in residencies. Or having to pass on a really big gig because I’m already booked for something else. I know those are good problems to have but I hate passing on opportunities. That has happened a lot during Covid too…I’ve been super selective and still waiting for things to get better. With that, I’ve had to pass on multiple opportunities but I believe it’s worth waiting it out a little longer. If I had to share what I want everyone to know about me, my brand and my story…it would be that…this is all authentic. There is no ego, no front, no crabs in a barrel approach. I really love what I do and love bringing people together. I am proud of my brand and what has been done to get here. I don’t take anything for granted and appreciate each and everyone who supports the wave!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Fellini’s is a great pizza spot in the city Big Daddy’s and Busy Bee is great for soul food! The beltline is cool for getting outside 2 Urban Licks has a cool vibe for drinks
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
The pandemic has been extremely difficult for us all. Music has been therapeutic for me just as it has been for the people that have been coming to my live streams on Twitch (Twitch.tv/djprinceakeem). I have to give a shout out to the Royal Family! They show up in a BIG way and give so much love each and every time that I’m on. They give a purpose for me and give me a drive to continue to do what I love. The family that we have built has been really dope.
