We had the good fortune of connecting with Diamond Ross and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Diamond, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Initially, I always knew I wanted to own a clothing line. Whether it be just tee shirts and limited supplies. I knew it would be something dope based on my creative capabilities. As far as business I never thought about that specifically. I just knew I loved clothing and design and just wanted to create. As I got older I realized that me having a business would allow me to build my own financial freedom under my own rules and create as much as my heart desires.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
First, nothing has been easy with everything that I’ve accomplished thus far, when it comes to my businesses. The ups and downs and the lack of support in the beginning it’s been a tough road and I know the bigger I become the more stress there is to come. The reason I keep going is because I do this for my own generational wealth, something I can call my own and leave to my family. What sets me apart from others is that I am a woman creating fashion and candles specifically for men. Most women would not think to create for the male counterpart but naturally I feel more drawn to the male perspective and as a woman I am placing my twist on it. In 2017, I was diagnosed with brain cancer and that was a real challenge for me because at the time I was only 27 and I knew I had not fully served my purpose. Going through the whole denial and acceptance process was life changing. I was able to completely see myself and that really helped me become a better person. I was blessed enough that in 2018, I was officially in remission and able to continue living life. This made me pursue my dreams even harder because they had true meaning at this point in my life. Passion Over Pain, LLC is for people who have had obstacles in their way throughout life but still pursued their passion not matter what. They never stopped grinding. I express myself through this clothing line creatively and passionately because this is something I’ve been trying to accomplish since 2012. Life has always thrown a wrench in my goals but what that has taught me that there will always be something in the way but as long as I learn from those obstacles and keep going, success is bound to follow. I recently started making my own candles because like most people I enjoy them in my home. I quickly realized that most men do not have a large choice when it comes to masculine scented candles. I decided that my candle line will be dedicated to them. Creating an array of fragrances with a dominate touch, and look that will suite any man. Which is how I came up with the title, Suited Scents, a gentlemen’s candle.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Little five points is definitely the next place to go. Everything in the area is so eccentric. So many nice places to eat and shop. WishATL is a boutique that always has the latest in urban fashion. Atlanta is also know for breweries. – Sweetwater brewery – Scofflaw brewery – Steady hand brewery. All three are the best in my opinion. Edgewood ave is where I would take my friend for the nightlife, So many different bars and lounges for open mic, and good DJ’s. To finish the weekend off right, we would grab brunch at either BQE or Garden parc to end the trip off with great food and music.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are so many ppl I could s/o but one person in particular has always had my back and I must say that is my good friend Jessica Gardner. Ever since I met her she has been pursuing her own dreams and running a teaching business, Blueprint to Success. She has always encourage me to do better and motivated me with great quotes. Jessica always recommends books that can help me along in life and in business. Her spirit is genuine and I definitely want to thank her for all her support. @cubbywins
