We had the good fortune of connecting with Deshunte’ Benham and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Deshunte’, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My thought process behind starting my own business was rooted in a combination of necessity, ambition, and a deep desire to create something meaningful. I’ve experienced the grind of a 9-to-5 job, and while it provided stability, it also highlighted the limitations of working for someone else—especially after a major head injury that forced me to rethink my future. I realized that I didn’t want to be in a position where I was financially or creatively restricted.

Starting my own business became a way to take control of my life, align my work with my passions, and build something that could provide generational wealth—not just for me, but for others in my circle. I wanted to capitalize on my skills in technology, education, multimedia, and investing while also addressing the gaps I saw in these industries.

The businesses I’ve started reflect my long-term vision of building a diverse portfolio of ventures that fund one another, allowing me to grow sustainably. I’m also passionate about leaving a legacy—whether it’s through my companies, the people I inspire, or the impact I have on my community. The thought of creating opportunities, helping others grow, and ensuring my family never has to worry financially motivated me to take the leap.

For me, starting a business isn’t just about money—it’s about freedom, creativity, and the ability to shape my own narrative.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My businesses are built on innovation, creativity, and a passion for making a meaningful difference in people’s lives. I operate across diverse industries—technology, education, and multimedia—through my companies: D.T.E Learners Academy (an EdTech and education company), D.S.M EMPIRE (a record label), and Y33Media (a multimedia company). Each venture is focused on providing value, empowering others, and creating opportunities that inspire growth and transformation.

What sets my businesses apart is the ability to bridge technology, education, and multimedia in unique ways that address real-world needs—whether it’s helping individuals build tech careers, producing impactful content, or creating innovative tools to engage and educate. I’m most proud of the resilience and growth these businesses have achieved. From running a successful multimedia company for over four years to expanding into EdTech, every milestone reflects dedication and vision.

The journey hasn’t been easy. I’ve faced financial challenges, the aftermath of a major head injury, and the uncertainty of building something from the ground up. Overcoming these hurdles required adaptability, a strong support system, and a relentless drive to succeed. I’ve learned to embrace failure as part of the process, seek mentorship, and focus on long-term goals instead of short-term setbacks.

A key lesson I’ve learned is that success requires not only passion but also strategy, consistency, and the willingness to take calculated risks. I’ve also discovered the importance of building a brand that reflects authenticity and provides real value to its audience.

What I want the world to know about me and my brands is that we are here to create impact and legacy. D.T.E Learners Academy, D.S.M EMPIRE, and Y33Media are more than just companies—they are platforms for empowerment, growth, and transformation. My mission is to inspire others and show that with determination, vision, and hard work, anything is possible.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend were visiting Atlanta for a week, I’d craft an itinerary that captures the city’s unique mix of history, culture, food, and entertainment. We’d start with iconic landmarks like the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historical Park, Georgia Aquarium, and the National Center for Civil and Human Rights to immerse ourselves in Atlanta’s history and legacy. Outdoor spots like Piedmont Park, Stone Mountain Park, and the Atlanta Botanical Garden would provide stunning scenery and a chance to unwind.

The food scene would be a highlight, with stops at local favorites like Flying Biscuit Café, Mary Mac’s Tea Room, The Varsity, and more upscale spots like South City Kitchen and Staplehouse. For shopping and trendy experiences, we’d explore Ponce City Market, Krog Street Market, and Lenox Square, while enjoying street art along the BeltLine Eastside Trail and the quirky vibes of Little Five Points.

Evenings would be all about nightlife and entertainment, with live music at St. James Live, rooftop drinks at SkyLounge and 9 Mile Station, and vibrant spots like The Battery Atlanta. Whether through its rich history, incredible food, or vibrant social scene, Atlanta offers an unforgettable experience that blends Southern charm with modern energy.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to give a heartfelt shoutout to my mom for her unwavering support and encouragement during my toughest times, including periods of unemployment. I also want to express my gratitude to my mentor, Mrs. Lecrecia, and my aunt, Mrs. Allison, for their invaluable guidance. To my close circle of friends and family, especially my twin, Keondra, and my dear friends Denise and Chealse—thank you for standing by me and believing in me. Your support means everything!
