We had the good fortune of connecting with Daniel Phaithaisong and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Daniel, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I’m from Houston Tx but live in Long Beach CA now. I started as an athlete at 7th grade playing football, basketball, and ran track. I had dreams of going to the NFL or the Olympics. Around my 11th grade year after I lost my first love, girlfriend, to a car accident. I started hanging out with the wrong crowd and went down a path of crime. Staying out really late hours. My first time going to jail was for breaking into a car. Then I got my first felony when I was 18, charged with unauthorized use of a motor vehicle. In order for my aunt to bail me out, she said I had to move with her to California. I said ok, she bailed me out and I moved to CA. I started working at the GAP. And for a year or so, everything was going good. Then I met some other people, I ended up in a few drug addictions which led me to get locked up in CA. After I got released about 3 months later I get arrested for a DUI. And since I still had probation open in Texas. They extradited me to Texas to serve the full sentence of 14 months. All together did 22 months for that case. When I got out of jail from Texas I came back to CA. Started working as a security guard. Slowly I got into a painkiller addiction. Sippin prescription cough syrup, and taking Xanax, almost daily. I had my son in 2013. I got locked up again in 2020 for felon in possession of firearm and discharging a firearm. During that time in jail I had to withdraw from all the drugs I was on and thought I was going to die. It took about little over 30 days to start feeling better. During my time in jail, I was really hurt talking to my son and girlfriend over the phone and not being able to be there with them. I decided, I’m too old for this, I have someone who looks up to me. I can’t be leaving his life like this. He was the the reason my brain clicked, that I need to change my life around asap.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a content creator/Youtuber. I started making content as soon as I got out of jail in 2020. I did videos on some of my jail experiences and it went viral. I make videos showing how to create jailhouse style meals. Also I do a segment called bussin or disgustin? Where I get different exotic foods, or food hacks that are supposed to be good. I am mostly excited about being able to share my story with others in the world and be able to inspire other ex inmates that they can change for the better and live a better life. I went thru allot as a youngin to get where I am today. All the mistakes I’ve done, and situations I been in, made me who I am today. It wasn’t easy. I had to stop hanging out and associating myself with those who weren’t caring about their future and still living a life of crime. Also, I was in a halfway house when I started making videos. They wouldn’t let us record in there, so I had to do it in between counts, plus with all the other roommates, I had to do my videos at a time where it wouldn’t inconvenience anyone. But I got it done and was able to keep growing my page. Throughout everything, I’ve learned that it’s not too late to follow your dreams. You are in control of your own destiny. If you have a dream, keep working towards it and don’t let anyone tell you you can’t do it. Also, don’t let your past define who you are, create a better future for yourself, that will define you. I want the world to know, that I want to be able to give back. With my story, or with me putting together something with the community to give back. I’ve done it on a smaller scale but hoeing to do it on a larger scale soon! I want to be make a positive impact in the society and world.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Well coming from Houston Tx. It was a long drive to get to the beach in Galveston. But here in Long Beach, it’s only 15 mins away! So of course I would have to take my friend to check out the beaches.. I really like the sandwiches at Sara Fe Importer’s. Would definitely have to take them there. I’m not really in the night club scenes so really couldn’t help there. I’m still getting to learn the LA and Long Beach area myself haha.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to give a special shoutout to my Son, who is my stone. Also my girlfriend, my son’s mother. Stuck with me through my whole jail sentence and everything after. Also I want to shout out all my followers that’s been riding with me since day 1! Much love to all of yall. And all the new followers just getting here, much love to yall too! I want to thank God, for being able to give me the strength and courage to change for the better. Also my whole family who hasn’t given up on me yet.
