We had the good fortune of connecting with Damon Wright and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Damon, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
God had been putting shirt design ideas in my mind for years but I wasn’t living the right way. I was straddling the fence and playing church. The pandemic, the unrest over the summer, and my steps to live more for Him than for me all factored into why I chose to go into this business. I saw a lack of people really being dedicated to following scripture. They would follow someone or something to make them feel good about whatever they did rather than what the Word actually says. It was more about being comfortable and God didn’t call us to be comfortable but committed. You can be comfortable in my shirts as you are called to be uncomfortable in the work for Him. The popular shirts I would see would have sayings like faith, love, peace, pray, etc. I would always ask myself faith in what, loving what, pray to what? My shirts don’t shy away from the scriptures and are meant to challenge those in and out of the Body. I also knew that people needed to see and hear a different story.  As a Black man I want to show that the typical Black male is not what the media has tried to portray us.  We are educated, hardworking and family oriented.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
What sets my brand apart is that at this point I see every piece of apparel that goes out to ensure the quality of what my customers are receiving. I use high quality materials and screen print, rather than direct to garment or vinyl, for a longer lasting yet still bright look. My designs will definitely spark conversations that will give opportunities to witness. My brand is about getting those in and out of the church to stop, think and choose to live for the God of the Bible over everything. The name of my brand is not just a play on my last name but a call to true righteousness. I believe the reason our world has so many issues is because the Church has failed to live up to what the Word says. We have traded convenience for obedience. I’m most proud that I’ve been able to hear from people about how my brand has helped them speak to others. If anyone tells you that running a business is easy they are lying. It’s difficult and challenging but for me it’s worth it. I’ve overcome challenges, such as switching production methods a few months into starting my company, by being open to change and constructive criticism. The biggest lesson is developing a business plan earlier on in the process and focusing on the why of what I’m doing and for whom. I want the world to know that Wrighteous Wear is a call to live righteous in and out of the church because THE Church doesn’t end at Amen.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to dedicate it to my amazing wife and my family. My wife keeps me grounded and focused when/if I get frustrated. She always reminds me who I’m doing this for and to be patient. This has helped tremendously. She makes sure I don’t burn myself out in my efforts to improve both myself and the brand. She also supports me spiritually through prayer. My family are some of my biggest cheerleaders. Since they are Believers as well I can bounce ideas off of them and it helps that they can be brutally honest because they want me to succeed. This has helped push me and resulted in greater confidence and drive to do what God has asked of me.
