Today we’re excited to be connecting with Cornelius Newman again. If you haven’t already, we suggest you check out our prior conversation with them here.

Cornelius , we are so thrilled to be connecting again and can’t wait to hear about all the amazing things you have been up to. Before we jump into all of that, some of our readers might have missed our prior interview, so can you take a moment to reintroduce yourself?
I am Cornelius Newman, M.S., a Writer, Director, Producer, and Editor from Buffalo, N.Y. I and my long-time friend and business partner, Decarlo Tatum, Jr., started The Write Brothas Entertainment in 2017. Our slogan is “It’s OK to Imagine,” simply because it is, and, more importantly, it is necessary to prosper and be fruitful in life. Personally, I find it vital to use my imagination in creating entertainment. What I create reflects those that I represent unconsciously and conscientiously. So, creating media of any kind is a tremendous responsibility. For me, media is the most powerful tool in the world; it shapes ideologies and personalities, even destines. That being said, it must be used wisely and effectively for a purpose. Hence, everything we do is done with intentionality and elevated imagination. This is the core sentiment of The Write Brothas Entertainment. Over the last eight years, I found myself struggling to complete my first film. We started filming in 2019 and did not complete it until 2023 due to COVID, life challenges, and budgetary restraints, Although we almost threw in the towel, we persevered. After all, you can’t claim to be a filmmaker of any kind if you haven’t made a film.

Awesome, so we reached out because we wanted to hear all about what you have been up to since we last connected.
As I mentioned, we completed our first independent feature film, “They Came For Us, a sci-fi fantasy film with just a dab of horror. The interesting part about making an independent feature film with a two-man crew is that you have to wear every hat imaginable. On top of writing, directing, casting, and producing with Decarlo, I was the cinematographer, camera operator, gaffer, grip, script supervisor, sound mixer/boom operator, editor, actor, voiceover actor. Decarlo focused on handling the location scouting, set design, and wardrobe, along with hairstylist and clothing designer Caty Green. He was also the film scorer and composed an original soundtrack accompanied by music production by the talented Altanta-based musical duo Patrick and Chenoa Daniels, who helped us establish a motif for the film. To date, “They Came For Us” was the Official Feature Film selection at the Urban Media Makers Film Festival and won the AFROFUTURISM Festival award for Best Feature Film. It also was an Official Selection at the RoleCall Indie Showcase.

Along with “They Came For Us,” I also directed and co-produced a full-length documentary entitled “See Through Me” featuring Atlanta-based Photographer Carlos York. It was amazing to witness Carlos display the vulnerability and authenticity of what makes him the man and photographer he is today. I am looking forward to the moment when the film will be shared for the world to see.

Most recently, I released my first sci-fi fantasy comic book based on The Write Brothas latest screenplay entitled “88.” Ironically, I never read comics as a child or adult, but as a writer, I like to be able to tap into any genre I can to express my vision and creativity. It was a project that took 4 years to complete, but it was well worth the effort and sacrifices. It is a hit with children ages 8-12, as well as teens and adults of all ages. All have been impressed with the presentation and have enjoyed the story. Everything about the comic book is custom, from the dimensions of the book to the glow-in-the-dark reflective sticker and the limited-edition galaxy purple and gold gift box it comes in. I find it fun to go over the top in anything I can do. “If not, why not?” This is the question I usually ask myself. It is also the question I usually cannot answer. Why? Because it’s okay to imagine and go beyond all expectations. Moreover, the goal is to bring this project to the big screen. It was created to be an epic sci-fi adventure film saga for the next generation to come. The reviews we receive are heartfelt and absolutely amazing. We are so grateful for the love and support we received from the book. Some people have told me they are afraid to open it because it looks so good. Many others have purchased two copies. One to read and one to collect. Book 2 is currently in production, so stay tuned!

We also want to give folks a chance to get to know you a bit better so we’ve prepared a fun lightning round of questions. Ready?
