We had the good fortune of connecting with Chinua Joi Ivey and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Chinua Joi, what’s one piece of conventional advice that you disagree with?
We live in a hustle society, and many would consider the scale of a business to equate with its viability and credibility. But, in a time when social media followers can reach the hundreds of thousands – or even millions – I find that I am content in my humble but impactful corner of commerce. When I left corporate America, it was for a distinct reason. I did not turn to entrepreneurship to recreate what I left behind! So, how I define success differs from the status quo, and I am OK with it. One of the most significant advantages of entrepreneurship as an agency owner is the freedom to be a visionary and do meaningful and profitable work. A piece of unconventional advice is to find creative and strategic ways to pave your path. While I understand that there are industry standards and best practices, I disagree with being cookie-cutter. Business isn’t one-size-fits-all. Brands should have a unique voice, purpose, and offerings that add value to stakeholders and the industry.
What should our readers know about your business?
Ivey Media Agency (IMA) is a public relations consultancy specializing in reputation management for thought leaders. IMA recently launched its publishing imprint, Radiance Press. I am most proud of our work on meaningful projects that have a local impact. Whenever I have the opportunity to support people with a vision to serve others and empower communities – I am fully on board! Our brand philosophy at IMA is “Every cause, person, or brand has a story, and every story can spark change.” We believe in the transformative power of storytelling and how it can help brands stand out in a crowded marketplace.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
My husband and I love comedy shows. We’ve seen comedians at The Tabernacle, Coca-Cola Roxy, Atlanta Comedy Theater, Laughing Skull Lounge, and more. Comedy is one of the best ways to unwind; laughter is medicine. I’m also a nature girly. I would be remiss if I didn’t mention my favorite trails such as the Silver Comet Trail for walking or bike riding, Amnicola Falls for hiking and selfies near the waterfall, or even calming walks along the Chattahoochee River. There are so many options in Metro Atlanta to add a couple of thousand steps while breathing in the fresh air and enjoying nature. Finally, I would give a shoutout to the following restaurants that do not disappoint: Fish Thyme Restaurant & Bar in Acworth and Table 25 Fork + Wine in Douglasville.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I am a former foster child. That experience – the abuse and neglect, being in foster care, and then aging out of the system – helped to shape my worldview and perspectives on advocacy and social action. I recently revisited a signed book by President Carter from my personal library. A Call to Action is a difficult read, as it highlights global injustices inflicted upon women and girls. But, it is a book that shows his heart for equality and steps to achieve this goal. Many people have influenced me to approach communication from the standpoint of transformation and change. The Carters and the many books and resources they have produced have left an indelible mark on my life and business. In addition to PR consulting, I also teach communication studies courses at Bethune-Cookman University and Atlanta Technical College. My doctoral research, lessons, and practice provides a well-rounded approach to strategic communication.
