We had the good fortune of connecting with Chelsey Opare-Addo and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Chelsey, we’d love to start by asking you about lessons learned. Is there a lesson you can share with us?
When I started my Resume Writing business, my first instinct was to be the stuffy, professional businessperson that people expected me to be. Resume Writing is serious business, and I wanted to show my professionalism by showcasing a façade, a shadow of myself that I deemed “professional.” It wasn’t until I showed up authentically that my business really kicked off. I found my voice and shed the ‘prim and proper’ version of myself that I created to survive in Corporate America. I curse in real life, so I cursed on social media. I’m imperfect in real life, so I showed my imperfections and vulnerability on social media. When I learned how to show up authentically, my ideal clients were drawn to me. I was no longer lost in the sea of other professional Resume Writers. My clients understand that when they work with Not Your Mother’s Resume, they are gaining a unique experience. The most important lesson that my business has taught me is that professionalism is a social construct. No one is truly a “professional.” We’re all imperfect individuals, a little insecure, kind of weird, and occasionally awkward.

What should our readers know about your business?
Not Your Mother’s Resume takes you one step closer to doing that little shimmy you do when your phone lights up with an interview request. I created NYMR to help jobseekers say goodbye to snooze-news resumes from the past and hello to modern and achievement-oriented resumes. I ditch outdated “rules” from the Fresh Prince era to deliver a proven approach to resume writing – shedding cliches for memorable resumes with fierce branding statements, strong language, and accomplishment-packed bullet points. I’m energized by helping my clients own their accomplishments, land more interviews, increase their salaries, and level up. I’m proud to say that my clients have landed highly competitive, six-figure roles at Fortune 500 companies and achieved impressive salary increases, up to $40K. This is Not Your Mother’s Resume Writing Service, not your father’s, and not your average. I create resumes that are spicy and interesting while still following industry standards. I leverage my career as a Recruiter to maintain current industry knowledge. In short, I know the rules and when to break them.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I have never created an itinerary, and I’m not going to start today! We would definitely wing, and we’d have an absolute blast.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to dedicate this shoutout to my friends, family, resume writing community, and all 191 of my clients who have been an endless source of inspiration and encouragement. Specifically, I want to recognize Breanna (you can shut up now), Rae, Perry, Amber, Mel, Jessica, Marlonda, Elle, Courtney, and the apple of my eye, Carter.
