We had the good fortune of connecting with Carla McWhorter and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Carla, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
It all started as a child who had an obsession with makeover scenes in movies. I would rewind and play them as much as I could. There was something magical about transforming someone and how it wasn’t a superficial change but their view of themselves would transform as well. They would feel more confident and happier. I knew I wanted to provide that feeling to others. My goal is to provide that glamorous feeling to all women, no matter the age, skin type, or racial background. I am proud that I can cater to the personal needs of each client without them feeling limited. That didn’t happen overnight. It took many years of reading, taking courses, studying, videos and practice to get to where I am today. It wasn’t easy but you can’t have success without mistakes. Life is a learning experience. I have learned to look at progress and not perfection but constantly challenging myself to be the best version of myself I can be. I also come from a driven and entrepreneurial minded family. I saw the benefits of being your own boss and having the creative liberties to take your career where you want to without having limitations. Another push that inspired me to build Makeup Artistry by Carla was the need of specialized bridal artists in the industry. I saw where I could flourish and planted myself there.  Here we are today!

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
The wedding industry is booming for 2022. Many pandemic brides have scheduled their weddings and events for this upcoming year and we live in an era where social media has increased the need of looking perfect on your wedding day. That is where I come in and it’s kept me very occupied. Weddings are not for the weak of heart and can be very time consuming. Scheduling brides, trials, emails, phone calls, staying up to date on new trends, typing timelines for the event, deep cleaning and disinfecting tools is just some of the many things that keep me busy professionally.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Atlanta is a city rich with art and culture. The gastronomy is getting more diversified as the city is grows. A classic date night with my husband would include a simple stroll to Ponce City Market and the BeltLine. Stopping at El Super Pan for some hot tostones and some delicious drinks from Spiller Park Coffee. Some days we love to go to West Side Provisions and enjoy some amazing authentic Italian food at Forza Storico and then enjoy meade tasting at Savannah Bee Company. For dessert we love to enjoy the best gelato in town at Voga Italian Gelato. To finish the day we can’t help but smell the fresh flowers at Le Jardin Français Boutique. It is tres magnifique!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
The success of my business has been thanks to the love and support of my husband Isaac. He has been my number 1 cheerleader, my chauffeur, my smoothie provider when I need it most and my assistant in whatever it may be. He has sat down with me to help clean my brushes and carry my tools. Without him I wouldn’t be able to take my business where I would want it to be. I am extremely blessed to have him in my life. I love him more than words can describe. Thank you Isaac. Also big thanks to Anna Patterson for helping me grow in this industry and for being a wonderful support in all my endeavors. Thank you to all my family and friends for being my push and drive throughout it all.
