We had the good fortune of connecting with Cam Herring and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Cam, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Going into my final year at MTSU, I am tasked with coming up with plans post-graduation. I could go the safe route and apply for any job with an opening or I could invest in myself and take the risk of freelancing as an audio engineer and producer. I feel as if I am prepared to take the risk right out of college and do my own thing. Me feeling as comfortable as I do with this decision gives me ease and I will be able to look back and not have regrets for taking this risk for myself. I still want the experience of working under a company but not at the risk of my time. Maybe I’ll do both. Regardless, I think taking this risk can be scary looking at it from one perspective, but rewarding from another.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I feel as if I still have a lot of work to do. I’m still learning every day and I can feel myself getting better. I feel good about my knowledge as a 20-year-old college student about to enter the world without the burden of school for the first time. My biggest challenge right now is finding people who share my intentions and are working as hard as I am. It’s not easy now and it won’t get easier. I’ve learned that no matter how much you like certain people, there becomes a point, where your time is getting wasted around them. I like to have intention in my day to day life and I plan on putting that drive into every aspect of my life.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love midtown! If it is sunny out, I could stay in Piedmont park all day. I love biking, or riding scooters along the belt line from Krog Street market to the park. At Krog, I have to get a sandwich from Fred’s Meat and Bread. You could hit all of the basic tourist attractions like the aquarium, or the Coke factory, but what makes this city so special to me is the amount of trees and greenery everywhere and the food. I could spend an entire week here just going to different restaurants or each meal. I love the music festivals that come to Atlanta especially AFROPUNK. You cant go wrong in this city but for chilling and eating go to midtown. For shopping, Buckhead is for sure the place to be!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I appreciate everyone who has supported me implicitly and explicitly. Whether that’s reaching out to me and expressing how a mix sounds or playing a song on repeat that I may have been a part of. Specifically, my family’s support is what keeps me going. My mother is proud that I’m doing something for myself. I appreciate my girlfriend and best friend Melissa who has been by my side at my lowest points. My closest friends who encouraged me throughout high school and college, any artists that have graced one of my beats or let me mix their song, I appreciate it all. I remember it all.
