We had the good fortune of connecting with Bryana Williams and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Bryana, what habits do you feel play an important role in your life?
Some of the habits I believed really help me succeed is being consistent and remaining coachable. Being a former athlete, I knew what it takes to be successful on and off the court. I knew I needed to work hard, be on time, be disciplined, be able to work with others, communicate, lead by example and give my best every day. I took those same concepts into my business. I knew it would be key for me to get to where I needed and wanted to be. Doing all those things consistently I knew would be the key. Then being coachable is something every leader needs to be. We are always learning, growing and developing to be better and be able to make those around us better as well. This is my method when it comes to success!
What should our readers know about your business?
I have a non-profit called B Better U. Our focus is Mentorship and providing resources for: youth, young adults, students, athletes and those in leadership and in the community who work with them. We are currently on middle school and high school campuses, we work with juvenile halls, group homes and other organizations to make sure the next generation has everything they need to walk in purpose and be successful. What sets BBU apart from other organizations is our intentionality and programming. We make it a focus to really know every one of our Life Changers in our programs and to make sure we create a plan that is attainable for them to accomplish the goals they have set out for themselves. We are not focused on the number of participants we have, we are more focused on getting them to know who they are, what they want to do and getting them to walk in purpose while being in our programs. I am excited about seeing the growth that takes place with our students. Many really make remarkable changes not just for themselves, but for their families and those around them. I love seeing them apply what they learn into the areas of their life that they struggled in and then come back and say, “Coach Bry, it worked”. When they see the results and change they worked so hard for every day and they see how far they have come; that is just one of the many things that make my heart happy. It was not easy to get to where BBU is today. Took a lot of work, free labor, building relationships and many No’s from people to get to where we are and striving to go. Some of the challenges we faced is financially and building a team. It is hard to serve and do at the capacity our heart is at when you don’t always have the funds to do it. Then finding the right people to buy into the vision and who actually want to do the work is a challenge as well. I believe in building up people and helping however I can. Whether they are there a short time or more long term; I give my all to anyone who is there. I now am very strategic how I bring people in and what to look for when building a strong team. With the funds to make the organization run, I just look at all my options. There is a lot of grants out there, so I learned how to write grants and I go above and beyond to get the word out about what we do. There are many people willing to give if it’s a vision they can come behind and be apart of. One thing I always tell my Life Changers is to never give up. No matter what life throws at you, always give everything you have. Some days are better than others, but put your best foot forward daily as if it was your last. I have always learned to let your life speaking louder than your words. Be the example, be that light wherever you go and make everyday count. When we learn to take the tough moments in our life and learn from them to make us better and teach us to overcome, that is how we become better and we are no longer average. We want to be extraordinary in every way, but it first starts with us doing the work. Your Best You, Always Starts With Your Better You!!!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
While in California there is so much to do. Because I am from Long Beach, I would definitely take them to the Pike. Some of the other places I would for sure take them too is: Disneyland, Six Flags, Hunington Beach, Venice Beach, Universal Studios, Knotts Berry Farm, Big Bear Mountain, Roscoes Chicken and Waffles, the Hollywood sign/ Hollywood Blvd, the Getty Museum, the Observatory and a really great authentic Mexican style restaurant. Venice beach always give you some fun entertainment. Going to Sunset Blvd, Hollywood Blvd, Melrose, you will see the diversity of Los Angeles. Going to the Staples Center and the Forum are like monumental places you have to go and see. Even driving down to San Diego or going up north to San Francisco would make a trip to California well worth it.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to dedicate my shoutout to my grandmother (Angela Williams) and my mom (Cassandra Williams). Without them being such wonderful examples of what hard work is, encouraging me to be an entrepreneur, to execute my goals, to always keep my faith and showing me what true servant leadership is; I wouldn’t be where I am today. Their legacy continues everyday I am able to live in purpose and do what I love. All I ever want to do is continue to make them proud and know their love and pouring they did in my life, is never in vain. There are so many people I can thank and deserve credit because I have an amazing village of people who support and pray for me. The other person who deserves this credit, would have to be Jesus Christ. Without my faith I wouldn’t be where I am today. I rely on my faith in every aspect of my life and I know to be able to do the things I have been called to do; I have always needed the Lords help through it all. I am forever humbled and grateful for the Lord choosing me to do this work and entrusting me with the visions He has allowed me to be a steward over. I never take it for granted and will always be appreciative to have this opportunity.
