We had the good fortune of connecting with Brittany Douglas and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Brittany, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
The most important factor behind my success is being the light not only for my daughter but for other women especially single mothers who have faced adversities and became successful in a time of darkness. When I started my business, Honey’s Harmony, LLC, I went in with the mindset that I had to show my daughter that no matter the circumstances in your life if you want it then go get it and never give up no matter what the path looks like. I was trying to be that “Superhero” mother figure going through things I never thought I would face in this lifetime I started to realize not only was I being an example for my child but I was also inspiring other women around me that were also conquering the same things I was facing on my journey. This helped me realize that this is what keeps my brand successful by being my true authentic self and helping pave the way for other women like myself.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Well, I am the Owner and Founder of Honey’s Harmony, LLC located in Durham, NC. Honey’s Harmony is a Black Owned Herbal Tea Company offering over 2o flavors of teas and herbs. I started Honey’s Harmony after a long and challenging transition in my life. I am a true tea lover and herbalist so I wanted to create a space that not only promoted healthy holistic living but also to incorporate inspiration, healing, and positivity through teas and herbs as a peace offering while taking my own experiences and showing others to stand strong on their journeys while healing and taking care of yourself. While balancing out my herbal tea company I became a certified Birth Doula, merging the two together to help be a support and advocate for mothers of color on their birthing journeys. I took my own experiences from postpartum to become a doula due to in the black community the Maternal Mortality Rate for Black mothers are tremendously high and I knew I had to be the light for someone else. I also have ten plus years of healthcare experience so it felt right. Transitioning to full time entrepreneurship was extremely hard to digest and get use to. I was stuck in the mindset of thinking I needed to work for someone else besides fully diving into my craft and perfecting it. Let me say it didn’t take long for me to fully accept my title and exude the light that I needed to shed for others especially other small business owners like myself.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I reside in Durham, North Carolina aka “The Bull City”. Durham has it’s own little hippie vibe going on. An essential part of the RDU I must add. Durham has so many dope and eccentric spots to choose from but if I had to show a friend around my city we would definitely stop by Dame’s Chicken and Waffles, the chicken is to die for! Beyu Caffe is another fave of mine a black owned coffee shop the atmosphere is really chill and the breakfast is really good. For a drink we definitely have to stop by The Pickleback, it’s one of my favorite bars in the city especially if want to know the locals and down for a good philly cheesesteak eggroll. I’m obsessed with Sho Nuff Seafood, you will get hooked instantly. We would hang out downtown to hit Unscripted, The Slush, and even The Counting House the dopest place I’ve ever experienced in the city it’s literally a hotel, museum, and restaurant all in one. I would just have to take them on a whole tour of the city because it’s too many places that I consider my favorites to name.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I have to dedicate my shoutout to Alex Elle, she’s a beautiful writer from the DMV and she has inspired me more than you can imagine. I came across Alex when I was living in the DMV and I purchased one of her books and read more about her story. She explained how being a single mother transformed her into the woman she is today through her words. My two favorite books from her are “Words From A Wanderer” and “Neon Soul”. She released Neon Soul at a time when my life was spiraling and that booked really helped me change my perspective of how I viewed myself, helped me realize my value when I felt broken. To witness another black woman standing in her truths even though society says it’s impossible helped that I too could conquer my own world and write my story.
