We had the good fortune of connecting with Bee Johnson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Bee, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My thought process was two-fold. First I wanted to control my own destiny and take control of my job security and give myself a pay raise by gaining more skills. And secondly I wanted to start my own business to pursue my passion full-time. Lucky for me my passion is fitness and I’m able to make a living doing what I love.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I provide strength training and boxing training for my clients. I travel to my clients or we workout at my private gym in Samdy Springs. Also if clients have a few friends that want to workout outside, I bring equipment to a local park and create a workout class for them. I pride myself on offering many options so clients can get fit anywhere. I also do virtual training as well.
I got to where I am today by training myself for 10 years before I saw my first client. When a close friend of mine showed me the opportunity staring me in the face, I fired my 9-5 boss and became a trainer. I worked at different boutuque gyms all over Atlanta building a rapport with people and learning the industry. Once I knew how to best operate I moved away from gyms and started my own business.
The biggest lesson I’ve learned is to treat people right and always prove a first class experience. The majority of my business comes from word of mouth so excellent customer service is paramount for the independent business owner.
I want the world to know that Body By Bee provides a fun, workout experience and I’ll give you all the motivation you need to maximize your efforts as you reach your fitness goals.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
It depends on what they want to do! Lol…but for fun I would take them to the Battery to walk around and chill. We would also visit Ponce City Market and the Beltline to eat good and walk it off after. And for night life hit up Gold Room or Edgewood area to bar hop. I love the spot Joystick that has the old school arcade games.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
One book that helped me grow as a person is Think And Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill. Reading (and listening to the audio book) helped me realize that even during the great depression some businesses were able to thrive due to filling specific needs. And that’s what business is, filling the needs of the customer.
I would also like to thank my wife, family and close friends for providing encouragement and critique to help keep me balanced.
