We had the good fortune of connecting with Barbara Hattrich and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Barbara, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I have always had a passion for baking, and was encouraged by my husband and family to start a side business during the start of the pandemic in 2020.

I don’t really have a business oriented brain. I just want to feed people.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a wife, mother, and Physical Therapist by day, home baker by night.

As a wife and mother, I work hand-in-hand with my husband to build a life for our family.

As a Physical Therapist, I analyze movement that causes dysfunction. I then educate my patients on different exercises/movement modifications to improve their dysfunction in order to return them to their “normal”/pre-injury state.

I think that’s why I enjoy baking. It’s the exact science that is needed in baking that also requires balance and creativity when it comes to flavor development.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My best friend recently moved from Montana to just outside of Nashville. She was telling me how much she missed Filipino food in Montana, and was actually shocked to find a Filipino store/restaurant outside of Nashville where she and her family live.

We would eat Filipino food/baked goods, of course. We’d go eat at Kamayan and at Estrellita, then pick up baked goods that I’ve ordered from my fellow Filipino bakers.

Then we’d go to all of the pop-ups that are happening all around Atlanta. The pop-up food scene here is amazing and so diverse. I am fortunate to have been able to participate in events with so many of them. The chefs/makers/bakers that I have met have been the nicest and most supportive…and their food…so delicious.

We live in Smyrna, so a day at The Battery would be on the list. Another whole day of eating along Buford Highway would also be on our to-do list.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My husband, our son (he’s 3); my parents; my sister, brother-in-law, and their twin daughters. They all deserve credit in my starting this little baking business.

My husband supports my crazy ideas. Our son is in bed by 7:30pm and wakes up around 7am daily which allows me to bake at night. My parents, sister, brother-in-law, and nieces are my built-in taste testers. They tell me if what I bake “tastes just like the Philippines,” or if it needs adjustments. All of them (my husband included) aren’t afraid to tell me if something is too sweet, not sweet enough, or if I need to start over.
