We had the good fortune of connecting with Autymne Huerta and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Autymne, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
The thought process behind starting my natural hair care business was my own journey. I grew up being taught that in order for my hair to be beautiful, it needed to be chemically processed- that was just the generational norm at the time. Throughout my childhood & teenage years I got relaxers up until 2011, when a good friend of mine gave me a relaxer that left my hair extremely damaged. That forced me to research how to properly restore my hair. I learned what proper maintenance looked like by studying natural ingredients that would aid in healthy hair growth. I did the work on relearning my hair by reading multiple books, watching tons of YouTube videos & even experimenting with different ingredients by making my own concoctions in my kitchen. This was not an easy journey but I knew I was worth it. I became obsessed with researching natural hair care & the integrity of my hair strands became my passion. With time, not only did I learn how to perfect natural hair styles, the concoctions I made worked for my hair! I also gave samples out to family & friends and it was an instant success. At that point around 2018, I began to participate in small Black business events to network with other Black people which really strengthened my passion on building my business to what it is today. I am a dedicated natural who always knew that I wanted to be apart of our natural care industry in a major way, My goal is to continue to provide healthy hair products to my people & continue to educate & instill the importance of organic hair care in our community.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Black Wisdom Hair Care, LLC was built organically, based on my life experiences, which makes me proud. I got here because I participated in natural hair events & workshops, created my own website, used social media to my advantage & built valuable relationships with community partners. Building your own business it not easy; it’s all about hard work, dedication & discipline. Sometimes when you are truly passionate about something, you become your biggest critic & your own worse enemy- I feel it is very important to stay focus on your goals & try to complete small tasks daily & not to overwhelm yourself. I would like the world to know that natural hair care is deeper than the aesthetic of hair & beauty, it’s about our culture.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to dedicate this shoutout to my amazing husband Shane Huerta & our beautiful children Gabriela & Jrue Huerta.
