We had the good fortune of connecting with Ashley Maltbia-Burgess, MBA and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ashley, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
No risk, no reward. I’ve always believed that everything I desire is out there, I just have to go and get it. From leaving my corporate job in Washington, DC 10 years ago, packing up my car, and moving to Atlanta in the middle of the night to taking a chance on my dreams by starting my hair care company, Maltbia – The Answer To Your Hair Prayers , after being in the financial services industry for years. My entire life has been about taking risks. However, as I learn and grow as an Entrepreneur I now believe it is not only about taking risk but taking CALCULATED risk. The type of decisions that are informed by your experiences and sharpened by your reality. Everybody wants financial freedom and to be their own Boss but let me tell you, this is no joke-the sleepless nights, the expensive lessons, the constant learning, the roller coaster of beautiful highs and bewildering lows. You just have to trust your inner voice and guidance-no matter what other people may think. It is my goal to leave this world having used everything God gave me-every talent and every opportunity to leave this place better than I found it and this life goal includes taking very real risk for the rush of considering all of the things that could go right and relying on faith and destiny is the very spice of life.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Maltbia is a professional grade luxury hair and beauty company with a focus on naturally based ethically sourced ingredients. I launched Maltbia with the desire to share my mother’s age old lessons of self-love and preserving my natural hair. The woman that is ready to prioritize the health and maintenance of her hair from the inside out is my focus. She is the 9-5 professional, the stay at home mom, the busy entrepreneur with a million great ideas, and every other woman interested in taking her beauty regimen to the next level. 80% of Black Women will suffer from Fibroids by the time they are 50 years old, Black women also have a higher instance of cancer than women of other races and this has partly been linked to the chemicals commonly found in Black hair care products and dyes. It is my goal to change this reality by focusing on not just what we are putting in our bodies but also what we are putting on our bodies and in our hair. A healthy body also includes a healthy mane. We are taking a holistic approach to beauty, self-care, and prioritizing mental and physical wellness for Black Women. Our signature product, “Liquid Gold”, is an all natural hand-made Jamaican Black Castor Oil based 3-in-1 elixir created to aid with thinning and hard to grow hair. The entire Liquid Gold collection consists of herb and vitamin infused shampoo, conditioner, all natural edge control, and a deep conditioning mask. We’ve been featured in MarketWatch, multiple local news publications, and most recently got our first retail placement in the Village Market Retail store in the beautiful Ponce City Market here in Atlanta. We are committed to turning the Maltbia suite of products into any hair lovers MUST HAVE. We provide only the highest quality, uncut, all natural ingredients that actually work. So the only question we have for you is…Are you ready to grow? Join us.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Atlanta has some incredible restaurants, stores, and one of a kind experiences. Our first stop would be the Village Market Retail store in the heart of Ponce City Market. The Village Market Retail store is home to over 25 black owned brands including Mane By Maltbia. We would then grab a bite to eat at Desta Ethopian kitchen for some of the best food in the city or maybe if we’re feeling like getting a taste of “old Atlanta” we’ll head to Q Time for a soul food plate. Once we’ve eaten, it’s time to hang and get on the hunt for the best adult beverages at the most exciting bars in midtown Atlanta including but not limited to Joe’s on Juniper and Twelve cocktail bar. Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to my friends and family that have supported me and my businesses throughout my entrepreneurial journey. I am truly grateful for every purchase, social media share, and every word of advice and encouragement. I would also like to thank my wonderful wife Ashlee Maltbia-Burgess for her encouragement and loving support every step of the way.
