We had the good fortune of connecting with Ashley Chappell-Rice and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ashley, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I wanted to do something I enjoyed. My photography business started really by me showing myself on IG story learning and doing photography. From there I started to book clients. I didn’t have a name, business cards, or a real price list. Yet the clients continued to come. As time went on. I began to work on small task for my business as needed. When I felt I was under pricing myself. I sat down and made a price list. When I knew a big client would tag me I created a name. As I grew I made a website. So for me my thought process was I’m following my passion and from there a business was created.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m a portrait beauty and fashion photographer. I would say what sets me apart is me. Art is a reflection of who we are. It’s no one like me and it’s no one like you. My most proudest moments come from learning and experimenting and creating freely from my heart. How did I get to where I am today? I would say by not giving up. Being open to learning that will allow you to grow. What are lessons I have learned along the way? Being an artist brings a lot of self awareness and brings out internal issues. So I’m learning a lot about myself through art. I’m learning what I like and what I don’t like and what i want to present or say to the world. I’m still figuring out what I want the world to know about my brand and my story.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love to go out to eat. I live in the Chicagoland area it’s always some festivals in the summer time. I love the beach’ or museum. My favorite would probably be a to go to a nice coffee shop. A nice book store. I’m very low key and chill lol
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have so many people to credit. First and foremost my family. My husband and my kids. Who are my biggest cheerleaders and support system. Second for my village and tribe. I remember my hairstylist/ cousin told me when I first started the best thing I could do was surround myself with like minded people. I can honestly say I have that. I have amazing photography friends and a small circle of people who encourage me and help elevate me. I’m grateful for them. They know who they are
