We had the good fortune of connecting with Anne Etonga and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Anne, what’s something about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?
One thing about my industry that outsiders are probably unaware of is that there are over 30,320 Chiropractors currently employed in the United States. Although, 50.5% of all Chiropractors are women, black chiropractors make up only 1.6% of the industry population. Approximately 7.5-10 percent of U.S. adults are estimated to visit a chiropractor each year- while only about 50% of people have ever been to see one. This ratio is even lower among African Americans, as chiropractic care is not often discussed or utilized among African Americans. The good news is that, over the years, Black women have become the fastest growing demographic of entrepreneurs in the U.S.,” accounting for nearly 2.7 million businesses nationwide.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I am both the Owner and Chiropractor of One Eighty Chiropractic. My practice is based in Atlanta, GA and serves all of Metro Atlanta. One Eighty Chiropractic serves its patients and community by providing a high-quality and affordable health care in a comfortable environment. As a Chiropractor, I know that many factors affect your health, including exercise, nutrition, sleep, environment and heredity. Therefore, every individual’s adjustment is tailored to their specific needs. Regardless of the condition, the entire person is taken into account. My mission is to reduce pain and discomfort through manipulation and adjustment of the spine. I’ve had success treating patients ranging from infants to seniors. I specialize in preventing, diagnosing and treating conditions associated with the neuromusculoskeletal system, while improving each patients functionality and quality of life. Conditions treated include: low back pain, neck pain, pregnancy, acute/chronic pain, wellness care, sports injuries, spinal deformities (Scoliosis), TMJ disorders, Sciatica, migraine and headache management, extremity care arthritis pain, among many others.

The year 2020 was a rough year for me and the pandemic did not help. I graduated from Palmer College of Chiropractic West in September 2020 and immediately felt lost. I wasn’t excited about life and I was so afraid of failing. The fear literally paralyzed me. I was having a HARD time passing my National Board of Chiropractic Exams. I had to retake them multiple times, which really put me in a dark place and ultimately pushed me away from the people I love. I was depressed, sad, frustrated and angry. The people closest to me could see that I was just not in a good place. I would call my mother every day just to vent or express how horrible I was feeling – she always gave the best advice and never gave up on me or never allowed me to give up on myself. I remember having doubts about myself and dealing with imposture syndrome. I was so mad at myself for thinking that I could even do this and for thinking I was even smart enough to accomplish such a huge goal. Black chiropractors make up 2.3% of the industry population! About 2.6% of the nation’s doctors are black. I didn’t think I’d be one of them. Just looking at the statistics and the numbers completely scared and discouraged me. I wanted to give up! It took a lot of work to get out of that dark place and it began with rebuilding my mindset. I had to disconnect from social media, get a tutor and I even began meditating. I went on a Daniels Fast and focused on passing my board exams. On 7/18/2020, I passed the Physiotherapy portion of my board exams. On 1/16/2021, I passed Part 1 of my board exams. On 2/28/2021, I passed Part 2 of my board exams. On 3/28/2021, I passed Part 3 of my board exams. On 5/23/2021, I passed Part 4 of my board exams. On 7/25/2021, I officially received my license to practice in the State of Georgia. I sacrificed going out, traveling, shopping, social media, certain friendships, hanging out & having a life. However, it was SO worth it to finally say that I DID IT!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend was visiting the area and I wanted to show them the best time ever, I would take them to two places. One of those places being Chateau Elan Winery & Resort and the other being Ponce City Market. Chateau Elan Winery & Resort is a beautiful 3,500 acre vineyard and resort that provides a stunning indoor and outdoor event spaces, multiple restaurants, professionally staffed golf and tennis clubs, a world-class spa, and more. It is located in Braselton, GA and is very beautiful. The wine tasting experience is amazing and inexpensive. For $50 you can get a tasting which includes up to 7 flights of wine from a selection of more than 20+ wines. Ponce City Market is a vibrant converted historic Sears building, now a market with a food hall, shops & living space. The Roof at Ponce City Market is my favorite part! Whether you’re playing mini golf at Skyline Park, dining at 9 Mile Station, or making memories at The Rooftop Terrace the views are the best in the city!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
During my hardest time I found peace in knowing that I had my family and friends supporting and encouraging me. I don’t believe that I would’ve had the courage to start my own business had it not been for their consistent love and support. Putting God first and trusting in his plan prevented me from giving up as this journey to becoming a Chiropractor was not easy. Becoming a business owner was even harder. There are many people who acted as mentors and played an instrumental role in my journey in becoming a business owner. One of those people being Joshua John who I have watched grow a success photography company (Creative Vanguard Photography) here in Atlanta. He was able to encourage me get started and help me navigate the highs and lows of being a new business owner through of his own personal experience. This has been priceless in my journey. One of my favorite books to read was given to me by another mentor, Dr. Goldi Jacques-Maynes, DC. She is both the Chiropractor and founder of Golden Chiropractic located in Aptos, California. The book is called: “You Are a Badass at Making Money: Master the Mindset of Wealth” by Jen Sincero. I encourage everyone to read it as it helped me remove obstacles between myself and the income of my dreams.
