We had the good fortune of connecting with Anita Olokosu, Aurelie Djoumbissie, Melissa Bassa QBS and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Anita Olokosu, Aurelie Djoumbissie, Melissa Bassa, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Quality Beauty Supply Starting our own business …… Obviously, we started and we thank God for the journey.

It all started about 4 years ago while exercising at Rock Spring Park. We started bouncing ideas about starting a business, and we talked about different ideas some of which we still plan on diversifying into at a later point. Top on that list was the beauty industry especially given that we are 3 black women, and the beauty industry is a multi-billion dollar industry where African Americans account for 90% of spending and boast 3% ownership within the industry. We all agreed it was a necessary space for us to venture into.

We all had passion for beauty, and we also wanted the average African American person to have a pleasant environment to shop, enjoy outstanding customer service, and get great advice and information about what he or she is paying for.
We put about a year and a lot of thoughts into the planning phase because it was important for us to succeed. Not only did we want to have a big say in our destiny and leave a legacy for our children, but we also wanted to be proud and happy about the difference we made within our community. It has brought us joy having our customers come back bragging about what they bought or how our advice worked for them in their personal care routine.

We were obviously afraid to start as there was a huge financial risk and fear of burn out, but we have one another to rely on because we draw strength from our differences and our sisterhood is our greatest asset.

All through our journey, one of the greatest lessons we have learned is to take the leap of fate and not to be our own biggest obstacle. They say that fear is temporary and regret is for life. We have continued to learn from our mistakes, and our passion has kept us going for 3 years and counting . It’s been a rewarding journey and will continue to be by God’s grace.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
