Meet Alyssa Owens | Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Alyssa Owens and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alyssa, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
So after several years working in a corporate environment, I realized that I spent a lot of my time regretting not using my time for my creative endeavors. It always seemed like I didn’t have enough time for the things that mattered to me. After the birth of my daughter, I took the opportunity to re-invest my energy into my creative career.
Now I’m working full time as both a freelance graphic artist and tattoo artist, I feel as if my time is being invested into myself rather than into a business entity I don’t connect with.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I really can’t say that I have crafted a “brand” as much as I have just found what speaks to me. I represent animals most of all because they are a lifelong passion. I also have a tendency towards dark-themed art, references to literature, psychology, and mental health. When I create, I feel it’s almost a drive I can’t ignore. And when others find joy or fulfillment from what I create- that’s what purpose means to me.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Probably get sushi, go to Piedmont park, And just relax. I’m sort of a homebody so I would probably do a lot of cooking and just do artwork together.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My friends, family, and community have embraced me and my art since I was a child; I have always felt overwhelming support from those around me growing up, and that has continued into this new venture into digital art, and now tattooing. I have had handfuls of family, friends -and even people who I grew up with- coming to me telling me they were thrilled to see me pursuing my creative endeavors full-time. Above all, however, my husband has shouldered the entire financial burden while I worked my unpaid apprenticeship. He worked tirelessly at his job, and showed me so much encouragement during the challenges during my work. Without his undying support I simply wouldn’t be where I am today.
