We had the good fortune of connecting with Alicia Marie and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Alicia, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Freedom. When you are able to benefit financially from something that genuinely feeds and balances your soul everything aligns. I became tired of investing the majority of my energy into someone else’s vision. I want to leave an empire behind for my son and his kids and their kids.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I have been writing and singing my entire life. I got heavy into spoken word poetry and performance as a teenager which eventually led into me making music on a more serious note. I put a halt to everything years ago when I got pregnant with my son to pursue a “regular” career but never felt settled in any job I worked. I had the opportunity to record again a couple years ago and I became obsessed with it again. I had fallen into hard times the year of 2020 and lost my home. I was homeless the entire year and writing literally helped me get through. I started meeting people and reconnecting with others from years prior I wrote my EP during the entirety of my falling and rising throughout that year and recorded it all once I had gotten back into a home the beginning of 2021. Nothing about investing in yourself and your dreams is easy but now that I have this opportunity again I have complete tunnel vision on my end goal. I’m an authentic person. I do this because it has saved my life my entire life. I would do this money or no money, clout or no clout because it balances me. I dropped Street Renaissance July 2021 and this entire past year as been so rewarding in ways I could have never imagined. I’m learning I am definitely more powerful than I give myself credit for and as long as I keep going, there will be victories. I never give up. Even if I feel like I can’t do it anymore, I find a way to do something. I wake up grateful to still be here and I find a way.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
To be honest, I don’t do too much out here but work and pop out to events. I was actually just talking recently about how I need to try out the restaurants around here more because I love food! But the only things I do in my spare time are really just to channel my peace. I would bring them to the Eno river maybe, I like writing out there on nice days. Definitely bring them to any shows going on in the area. I don’t know, I’m pretty boring!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Yes! Of course I’m shouting out my son, Jalen. He is my whole reason for everything. He makes me feel like a superhero. I also want to shoutout my best friend Ebony Obsidian, my brother 6line, my producer and homie Quentin Rashad, my fam fam G Yamazawa, my homegirl Exhale TAOP and Icey Da Boss. Shoutout my Uncle Matt. Shoutout to Droop and the entire Pope and Davis family for always being the family I never had out here. We up!
