We had the good fortune of connecting with Akecia Owens-Cunningham and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Akecia, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I have always been someone who has been committed to excellence. I am enthusiastic about my work in education and I value my role as a change agent. As an agent of change, I found it necessary to help transform how the instructional learning environment operates by becoming a catalyst for change and inspiring others throughout their academic experience. As an educator, I noticed that there was a systemic problem in education, and I wanted to develop a solution to help meet the needs of students and teachers. I wanted to ensure that both teachers and students were able to seek favorable outcomes. As a teacher in the classroom, I taught students in the areas of mathematics and science at the middle school level. After teaching for thirteen years, I transitioned into the role of an Academic Coach. This allowed me an opportunity to see firsthand the needs of teachers, support personnel, and students. It also afforded me the opportunity to serve as a liaison between administration and teachers and teachers and parents. As an educator in and outside of the classroom, I have been able to examine education from all sides, which has given me full access to the industry of education. This lens led me to start Academically Victorious Consulting (AVC), LLC!
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Academically Victorious Consulting (AVC) is an educational consulting service that enhances the professional development of educational personnel as well as provides tutorial services for students. It is the mission of Academically Victorious Consulting to advance all aspects of student-based learning by positively influencing student growth and achievement, increasing teacher capacity and performance, and promoting positive outcomes. Academically Victorious Consulting aims to provide encouragement, resources, and strategies to help educators, parents, and students become academically victorious! As the founder and CEO, I think what sets AVC apart from other business is that our goal is to emphasize the VALUE of education. AVC empowers others to write, articulate, and fulfill their VISION by giving them a VOICE. I am so excited that I have an opportunity to provide a platform for teachers, and parents to share their opinions, beliefs, and experiences to instructional approaches and educational authenticity. Throughout this entrepreneurial experience, I have learned that it is vitally important that we empower the learning community to serve as a VILLAGE committed to seeing the educational success of all students. It is my desire that the world will have the opportunity to see more of our youth and anyone else who is on their educational journey experience VICTORY in their academic studies.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
am a true Georgia peach, born and raised, so if my best friend was visiting, I would want to have a set itinerary to show her the essence of Atlanta! I would want to ensure that her trip would include food, fun, fashion, faith, and friendship. We would have to stop by Busy Bee Café, Mary Mac’s Tea Room, and maybe even the Varsity! I think I would also want to stop by a few historical landmarks, such as the birth home of Martin Luther King Jr, the National Center for Civil and Human Rights, and the Atlanta University Center Consortium. In addition, I would have to take my best friend on a shopping experience at Lenox Mall and Tanger Outlet and I would undoubtedly have to stop by an AMC Movie Theater to catch the latest Marvel film. Last, but definitely not least, we would have to end her visit by stopping by my church, Beulah Missionary Baptist Church.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I must first give thanks to my Heavenly Father, Jesus Christ! He has indeed been the source of my strength. I want to thank my husband and my sons for reminding me that all things are possible! I also would like to give a shoutout to my parents for their unconditional love and support. A special thank you to my family for providing me with words of encouragement and inspiration. I want to send a shout out to my amazing friends for being in my corner when I needed to make it through some of the most challenging times. I am truly grateful for my family, friends, church, and my community for being an awesome support system!
