We had the good fortune of connecting with Lauren King and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lauren, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I’ve had always envision myself mentoring teenage girls since college. I felt as though I could relate with young ladies who grew up as I had and experienced the same or any trauma in which I could support. With that being said, the thought process of starting this phenomenal nonprofit organization began off personal experiences of wishing of the support and resources given from Whats In Your Hands, Inc. , back in college. I would like to be an inspiration to young women not to give up on your dreams, providing tools to succeed in life, and be a reminder you may fall but its okay to readjust your crown.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
It has been a long road of getting into the position of being the Graduation Coach/ Counselor at an amazing public charter school. I can definitely say it was not easy, I literally climbed my way up into this position in which I have some more climbing to go. In the beauty of it all I will continue to climb higher because of my passion to our next generation! I have literally learned through any passion it comes with challenges in order to succeed. I had my daughter while in undergraduate school which was a challenge of balancing school, work, and motherhood. I knew once I believed in myself that I could drown out the doubts and fears of not being able to overcome this challenge. It was a rather long and hard road, I wouldn’t change it for the world. It taught me to believe in myself, discipline, perseverance, and gave me strength. I’ve learned that people will not understand your journey and they will doubt you but its a must to keep going in spite of, I didn’t give up! I knew I had a daughter that will remember her mother pressing on through many trials and supportive immediate family whom was rooting for my success. I remember saying to myself whatever you do don’t give up because people are waiting on your downfall and do it for yourself. After graduating from my undergraduate school I reminded that I can do whatever I put my mind too and then I continued on with graduate studies in school counseling. I would like for every young lady to know from my professional life and career ” to never give up”, if your are passionate about a dream, pursue it! There will be challenges along the way but crush them and keep going. Whats In Your Hands, Inc one of many pillars is determination, once you are determined to complete a goal nothing can stop you. I just want to be a light in young ladies life to keep going; be encouraged, you are highly accomplished, your vision will come to pass if you believe it, you are a leader, and most importantly you have the strength to succeed.

Any great local spots you’d like to shoutout?
When my best friend comes into town we always go to Café Intermezzo! Depending on which season she decides to come ; more than likely over summer I would definitely take her to the food truck park in Cobb, visit historic museums, go bike riding in Piedmont Park, take her to the best restaurants Negril village for brunch and dinner at Sweet Georgia Juke Joint. If I was given the opportunity to share my favorite places or things to check out we will definitely need more than a weekend. Our first stop will be brunch; Atlanta Breakfast club, Le Petit Marche, or Sweet Auburn Seafood. As far as the nightlife I enjoy open mic poetry and being I am more of a chilled laid back type of person so we will check out Apache or Urban Grind. Atlanta is filled with tons of art and historic places; visiting Martin Luther King, Jr museum, Center for Civil and Human Rights, and High Museum would definitely be on the list. Also, I would enjoy Ponce City Market to shop, eat, and explore my love of crafts.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to give a major shoutout to Nikol West, Mary Fleming, Brittany Gibson, Bianca Rush, Jazmine Rochelle, every speaker who imparted wisdom and of course the ladies of Whats In Your Hands, Inc. Each of these ladies have contributed their time, money, prayers, support, and encouragement over the years. I would like to specifically give recognition to Nikol West for ALWAYS encouraging me to ” pick up my staff” these young ladies still need you and your helping hand through every project. You have been my backbone, my sister and absolute BEST push partner.
