We had the good fortune of connecting with Kenzie McCall “DJ Kenzie Q” and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kenzie, what do you think makes you most happy? Why?
Music. Music has always made me happy. For as long as I can remember I have always been around music or playing music either with my parents and learning how to play different instruments. Music can communicate feelings and emotions in ways that move people. It takes them to a moment or into a place where they can feel whatever emotion the song is conveying. I like to escape into music. Its my sanity.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
As a DJ the technique is just as important as song selection. I think that in my career I have really grown to appreciate both aspects with dj’ing. I am able to adapt to many different types of crowds and I believe that I have a really wide variety of music knowledge so that also helps me with my gigs. I’ve been dj’ing for about 3 years now. It was something I didn’t expect to happen at the time, but looking back on it now everything makes sense. I have a tendency to be a bit introverted so this enables me to use music to express myself. No matter where I’m playing I’ve learned that you really do impact the crowd. If your energy is off or you can’t read the crowd, they feel it. I always play to provide a vibe, a space, a chance to escape in the music.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would probably hang out around Midtown or Ponce City Market. There’s a lot of restaurants I would want to go to, top of the list would be Ra Sushi and Marlow’s Tavern. Being a DJ I usually frequent places I work at for the night scene, usually MSR, Felix’s, if it’s a Sunday go to Bonfire.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Taking on DJ’ing was a big feat for me. I have to give thanks and credit to all my friends and family who have supported me along the way. A big thank you to My Sister’s Room, Felix’s Atlanta, and everyone individually I have worked with at those businesses for providing me with endless opportunities to grow and expand my career. There’s too many people to name individually but I’m grateful for everyone who continues to support me.
