We had the good fortune of connecting with Smart Boy and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Smart, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
The process behind starting my business was one that forced me to really take a deeper look into what I was would actually provide. While I love music and love to create it, I wanted to make sure that I was providing an actual service to my clientele that was unmatched anywhere else. There was a lot of soul searching and financial sacrifices involved but in the end, it all worked out.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I started as a musician playing for churches and in different ensembles during my time in high school and college. Near the end of my college career is when I decided to dive into actually producing music and making a career of it. My art is something that you have to experience. I like to put a little bit of me into everything that I create. So while it may be for another purpose, there is a bit of me and my story in there. I am proud of how far I come in a short amount of time. Networking has truly opened changed the way I operate my business. The relationships I was able to create have allowed me to have the success that I have. Of course, there were many challenges along the way (financial, emotional, physical, spiritual, etc.). I’ve had to learn my worth the hard way. I’ve had to change locations and circles in order to grow. I’ve also had to have many tough conversations with myself. It is important to be realistic but relentless. I learned that no one will believe in you harder than you will. My brand is all about the process and growth. As long as we’re willing to go through the process, the growth will happen.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
So I have not been living in Atlanta for that long so my choices might be limited. Whenever my friends and family come through, for breakfast we are going to The Flying Biscuit and that non-negotiable! Then we would head over to Piedmont Park or the Beltline for some afternoon exercise and activities. For lunch, we could grab something from Zunzi’s, Gu’s Dumplings, or Dat Fire. We could hit Slim and Huskey’s too. After a nap, because I know I’d KO after some good eating, we could go and hit the Trap Museum, The Aquarium, or catch one of the many live shows around the city. Around 1 am when we get hungry again, we’ll head to J.R. Crickets. I am also very low-key so a lot of that would happen sparingly throughout the week.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to shout out everyone who has had a positive effect on my life and career as it stands now and where it will go in the future. I would love to call each one of them out superficially but I am sure I would forget someone or a group. To all of you, I just want to say thank you for literally everything!
