We had the good fortune of connecting with Millicent Huff and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Millicent, what principle do you value most?
The values and principles that matter to me the most are being honest and transparent, as well as working hard for what you want out of life.

This includes my regular life, as well as the business life.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Photography by M-Nichelle just hit year 5 of being in business. I must say that I am very proud of the way that I have grown in my craft since I started in 2016. One of the most important things to me is to make sure I continue to grow and not end up complacent.

When starting a business, you don’t realize the cost until you’re in it. It wasn’t easy getting here. I invested in myself with a lot of my personal money and time. I am finally in a place where I see more profits.

Every year, I try something different with my business just to see if it works. Most of the time it does. I adjust things that do not work as well.

I am where I am today, by constantly working harder to better my craft. I am also close with a few other photographers
We give each other peer reviews and critiques.

Lessons that I’ve learned along the way are balancing life vs work life, learning when to say no, and that all business isn’t good business.

My photography business is my personal brand. I take great pride in my work. I like to under promise and over deliver. My goal is for each of my clients to have a wonderful experience while I capture great images of them. While the world has gone digital, my ultimate goal is to have my clients display prints of my work on their walls.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
It’s funny that I have to answer this question, because my best friend is due to visit me in a month. First things first, she wants a nightlife photoshoot in the Birmingham Tunnel of Lights. While we are there, we can visit Uptown. Maybe grab a bite at Texas de Brazil or visit Top Golf. She’s enjoys hiking, so I would take her to Moss Rock Preserve as well. We’re both competitive, so going to Autobahn for go-kart riding sounds fun. Before she returns home, I will volunteer my big sister to cook a home-cooked meal, just like she did for us while we were in college.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to personally thank my mother for always allowing me to pursue different avenues of passion as a kid.

Whatever it was that I was into at the moment, she supported it. She never discouraged me from doing those things.

For the most part, I knew what I wanted to do, I just needed her to fund it. My mom always told me that she would support me until I got on my feet; she kept her word and for that I am thankful.

I would also like to give credit to my older sister Carmen. She’s like a bonus mom who just happens to be my sister. She has always poured life into me. She is a selfless person, who is always giving. She has always been there for me, giving me unconditional love and support.
