We had the good fortune of connecting with Tokyo Trendz and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tokyo, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I highly believe in taking calculated risk because nothing great has ever come from remaining stagnant in my experiences. I think of risk based off the possible outcomes of an action and if I can accept the outcome going good or bad then I do it. A big part of my life/career has been associated with taking risk ranging from moving out of my hometown to reestablish myself in a new environment, going to new places alone to network and establish connections with people in my industry, quitting jobs to bet on myself, and other various things.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I wear a few hats as far as what I do creatively but Djing is the main thing that I do. I believe what sets me apart from other DJs is the vibes that I’m able to curate based on my attention to detail and ability to read a room to determine people’s energy/mood. I’m proud that I’ve had the opportunity to play in multiple parts of the country and work with/open up for major artist at shows so far. I’m looking forward to branching into more festivals & international travel in the future. I’ve got to the point that I’m at now from simply staying committed to the process through the good, bad, and unknown times in life. Achieving anything great in life never comes easy and I’ve had to overcome quite a few challenges by remaining spiritually tapped in and understanding that life will always test you before the blessings come. A few things that I would like to display to the world through my brand is that you can do it too even if you don’t come from a family that’s well connected or have people around you with the proper resources as long as you’re willing to make a conscious effort to go and get the things that you need to be successful in whatever way that you define success for yourself. Another thing that I would like to show the world through my story is that it’s also cool not to always go with the flow and instead become the flow.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
There’s a lot of good spots in the city but I’ll try to narrow it down. Food: I would take my friend to wagaya on the westside for some good ramen/sushi, then Fellini’s pizza, jj fish and chicken, Benihana, STK, wingstop for some good lemon pepper wings, and other various spots. Visit/Hangout: I would take my friend to the high museum of art, little 5 points, krog st market, atlantic station, the beltline, revery vr bar, cumberland mall, stone Mountain & kennesaw mountain, starlites, and magic city to name a few places.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I have a few shoutouts that I would like to give. For starters I would like to shoutout to Pharrell Williams for being an earlier mentor to me from a distance and instilling the “you can do it too” mantra in my psyche. Next I would like to shoutout to the Traptastic team in Virginia for helping mold my talents as a DJ in the earlier stages of my career. Last but not least, I would like to give a shoutout to Paulo Coelho for writing the book “The Alchemist” which helped change my perspective of how I viewed life & the importance of discovering your life purpose.
